Anyone ever read Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods'??
Easily one of his best works! I've read Neverwhere, Stardust, and a lot of the Sandman material and this is really just a step above.
Engaging right from page one and it sucks you right in... I read 200 pages after I picked it up because I couldn't force myself to put it back down! |

thanks for the recommendation!
i've actually been meaning to get into his stuff for a while, ever since reading "Coraline", the creepiest child's book ever for my kid's lit class. i'll be sure to pick that one up after i finish my current find - Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. |

At least someone on this board has the ability to read!! Although I bet Jake will post if he comes across this thread.
The premise of the book is pretty cool. Basically it's a story of how all of the gods of old are forgotten when their cultures come to America. They fade into obscurity and end up in a fight for survival against the new American gods.... strange ones like the gods of TV, technology, information etc.... It's a really neat take on the vastness of different religions and the gods they've created over time. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! |

oh my, you have no idea how ME that book sounds. i'm a religious and classical studies major, with a focus on myth - i can talk about the gods and heroes of ancient greece, rome, mesopotamia, israel, etc, etc. i've actually even written quite a few papers on the evolution of deity over the course of human history, as a result of changing socio-economic circumstance. :nerd: though maybe that's a bad thing, as sometimes i find when i read books discussing my area of 'expertise' i'm too quick to criticize.. like with The DaVinci Code (bastards).
it's at the library so i'll pick it up before work today! |
