Do you wear Earplugs at raves?
It sounds like a silly question, but I've been thinking about it for sometime. Sure I'll look kind of odd wearing some foam looking shit in my ears, but maybe for the long run it'll be worthwhile. I heard custom made earplugs can reduce vibration and noise but still can maintain the crisp clear audio from the speakers. Then again while your on E it sounds like you can take any beating from a huge amount of noise.
Unfortnately whenever I come home from a rave and my mind is sobered up, the ringing starts to empower me. Anyway am I the only one conscience enough about my hearing or does the majority doesn't care about what happens to them years from now? Thanks for the input! |

i got a pair of cheap earplugs i got from shoppers.... the musician ones.... they're aiight i guess. sometimes i feel like they block out too much sound but at the end of the night i feel good.
and when i take em out for a second to see how loud the music is, it really is FUCKING LOUD! |

My girlfriend got me a set of musician's earplugs for Christmas.
It's kinda cool, actually - they're custom molds of my ear canal. To get them done, you book an appointment with an audiologist - usually they'll do a full hearing test first just to see if you've already done damage to your hearing. Then they take a little cotton disc with a string attached, and use a little stick with a light on the end to push the disc right up against your eardrum - this part can be a little bit uncomfortable, but it certainly doesn't hurt in any way. When the disc is in place, they take a syringe of blue goo and fill your ear canal all the way up... then four minutes later, they pull the string, and presto, out pops a perfect mold of your ear canal. They send that mold away and in a week or two you get your earplugs. They're somewhere around $120 CAD for fitting. It's worth noting that when you do start to lose your hearing, it drops off all of a sudden - like, lots of old folks hear fine one week, notice a problem the next week, and two months later are almost totally deaf. By the time you notice a problem, it's already WAY too late to do anything about it. PROTECT YOUR HEARING! It really IS all about the music... |

Wow, excellent replies everyone!!!
I was expecting more people being all hardcore about their ears but you guys actually care! Where do you guys go to get your custom earplugs and are they really worth it? I mean some 20-30 dollar replacement won't do the job as well? I guess because everyone's internal ears are different in sizes and the extra buck gets you all the protection you need. What do custom earplugs look like? Do they stilll look funky like the foamy ones? And the most important question is are they comfortable enough for you to dance all night even though your ears are sweating? A lot of the earplugs I wear at work or just cheap ones hurt my ears after awhile since the generic sizes for it aren't really for my ears. Although if I were to wear some, only for a rave since I love going up close and personal with the DJ's and the speakers :D Thanks for the input guys, for sure you made me save up for earplugs ;) |

totally important cuz most people dont realize any hearing damage has occured unless they hear crazy ringing. But normally you just hear what you hear right so everythings great! hehe anyways my teacher at ArtInstitute is gonna give me a place to go get the custom ear plugs - 20db ones i think. My ears are very valuable to me and i also plan on keeping them around for a while.

I've started wearing them to clubs/raves and the sort because of an incident I had at a party back in 03 - I walked by the tower of speakers as a specific decible of sound came out and wrecked my eardrum. I lost about 9db in my left ear because of it.
It's a good idea. |

Yeh what mofo said, i want one of the ones that attenuate the decibals but not the frequency... I already did a little damage to my left ear last summer in seattle, i was all drunk and danced right next to the huge stack for 3 sets. Ear rang for a long time, it's gotten better though.
