possible wal-mart in vancouver
the new proposed wal-mart for building in vancouver recycles rainwater for use in it toilets, has three windmills picking up energy in the parking lot, is heated and cooled by geothermal tanks, and has permeable asphalt in the parking lot to allow rainwater to soak directly into the ground! what a cool building!
too bad it's a wal-mart building :( |

it's been in the works since 2001, but COPE made lots of demands on wal-mart and wal-mart actually went and designed a store that met all those demands. now they have to vote on whether or not to allow them to build it. it's going to cost wal-mart twice as much as a regular store.
it's in today's globe and mail in the BC section. |

It was a cheap, small, gas-powered aircraft made of aluminum and fabric. This just goes to show you that cheapness doesn't always pay off. |

they tried to build one near where i used to live.
the entire city fought them so hard that they ended up abandoning their goals... unfortunately the swamp was already dug out and covered in concrete, the entire nearby environment was destroyed, and there was a HUGE amount of land completely torn apart... FOR NOTHING. i'm not saying don't fight it, by ALL MEANS FIGHT IT. I'm just saying, try to move quickly, otherwise your actions may be less usefull than at first thought. i know mine were. days of protesting not only against wal mart and its unacceptable work antics, and the fact that is a huge conglomerate which will destroy local businesses, but also for the environment. the land in the area, the marsh-wetland that was destroyed wont recover quickly, but at least it has some hope. good luck with this, if it was me, i'd do everything i could to stop it. |

i'm pretty sure they will allow the wal-mart to be built. i mean, they did meet all the demands that the COPE council put on the store to make it more eco-friendly. it's going to be the most self-sustaining big-box store in north america apparently. and although i'm not a huge fan of wal-mart by any means...this might be a good thing. i mean, it would set an example of other cities to follow about having these giant warehouse stores built so that they are more eco-friendly.
they're not mowing down swampland to build it. i'm divided on the issue. as much as i don't want to see wal-mart come to vancouver...i think the whole idea of the building is so great. what a pickle. |

but, like i said before, a building like this would set a good example for how these stores should be built in the future. it shows they have the money to do things like this if they are pressured enough. |

Wal-Mart's are a double edged sword.
One side: They destroy smaller stores as they can't compete. Other side: They employ a bunch of people that can't find work elsewhere, pay them enough so they buy from Wal-Mart who profits and lead an endless cycle of dependance on your employer. Ok... I'm wrong... they are like the plague. |

i know, im just anti-anti walmart.
walmart is a BIG convenience people with lower incomes and especially single parents. i understand the effects that big-box retailers have on the smaller, locally owned businesses but people need to realize that it's good for our economy. edit; i am like many others in this thread, divided. but i lean towards the yes side of things. |
