I started working on my first business plan in march of 2000, to start a record store with 3 of my close friends. Luckily for us. there was a program going, that helped inspiring entrepreneurs to start new businesses, in new westminster.
We received funding In september of 2000 and opened the store (Hipnotik records and apparel) in November of 2000. The store was open from nov 2000 to jan of 03. We eventually closed our doors due to the mediocrity of our success, at the time we were able to pay our bills and keep a little money for ourselves, but unfortunately we were not making enough to pay each of us a decent salary. And living with youre parents at 21 is not cool, despite what you may think. Im sure, actually i guarantee there were ways to make the business more profitable, but 3 good friends with different prioriteis was not working out. So long story short we shut her down, lost some money but i believe it was an amazing experience. One year earlier I started working part time for a small businessman, remanufacturing and selling toner cartirdges for laser and inkjet printers. Once Hipnotik closed down, I started working full time for this company in our new location. For the past 2 years the business has been growing at an excellent rate, and is making some good money. At this point my employer is offering me a partnership in the company and wants to open another store downtown, in the fall and have a "Toner To Go Van". So if anyone works in an office and knows anything about ordering, help an entrepreneur out and pm me. |

What don't I do in the scene?
God, I've been at this game for a long time... I started out as a promoter putting on a few shows with a couple buddies. They went well, but I have always been more into the music than the business side of it. So I decided to try out Deejaying. This took longer to figure out than promoting.... But as the years went by I finally got the hang of it and found my own style. I started to use my promoting skills on myself to get a couple jobs here and there. But I found I was still unsatisfied. Then I realized that what I really wanted was to be the one producing the traks that I was spinning. This led me to Arts Institute (formally CDIS) where I completed two courses in recording arts which incorporated a series of courses in electronic music. Finally I was producing my own tracks. Amateur still but these things take time.. So I'm back to the beginning promoting and Deejaying, and now designing flyers, to support myself while I continue to grow and learn in the feild of electronic music. This leads me to what I REALLY want to do which is own a studio to produce music and a distributing company to be able to distribute my music. One day this will be reallity and I'll be able to sit back and enjoy the finer things in life.

My dad dropped out of school at 17 to run his father's business. His dad got into a car accident and was in a coma for almost a year which forced my dad to learn how to run shit fast. The business was opened in 1962 family owned and operated. it is now 2005 same owner and operator plus a young apprentice (me) I am in the store almost everyday taking care of the accounts, selling, and sometimes delivering product. We have future plans of opening another location but not until I am able to manage a store on my own. Until then everyday is a learning experience and the hunger for opening up my own store will continue to grow.
No im not an Entrepreneur but eventually I would like to be. |

I have a small software consulting business (Diverse Development) which I run on the side. I write customized software. It never really took off because my biggest client hired me full time upon graduation.
ugly website: http://diversedev.com/ I've learned a lot about the many aspects of the business process (manfacturing, sales, r&d, design etc) bc the company I work for is quite small. I have several ideas for potential products which I may someday persue |
