pssttt.. who knows?
sorrrie I keep making threads in here.. but they're art-related so bare with me ;)
I think I'm in the right spot to ask people where I can take art courses? Art never really interested me until this year, so I'm still in the process of "developing" my own "style"... Still a lil self-conscious about a lot of things, and I want to explore further into what I can improve upon.. I find that being surrounded in different artistic perspectives helps me in developing my own style, and I've surprised myself a little this year with possibilities.. never honestly realizing that there aren't any limits... (yet) I would realy like to work in an environment where people take art a little more seriously, rather than my Art 12 class where the majority of people take it just because they need that extra credit to graduate. I'm lucky enough to have one friend (alice, 3 years younger) who is AMAZINGLY talented in art, and totally inspires me... I don't necessarily want to be INFLUENCED by some one else's art, in the way that I feel like I have to do things in a certain way, but I want to be a little more "Educated" in that area... do any of you know of any places in which I can take such courses that cover a wide variety or art? I find that I'm lacking knowledge in certain areas, that I need help with to understand. It's kind of like being able to pronounce the words of a different language, but not knowing what the words mean...? My teacher told me of classes At capilano, but I don't know if it's too late to register... and I live in Burnaby whereas that's in North Van... so... it's quite a distance... But I'm willing to go far, any suggestions? |

i was gonna suggest capilano college to you but you already know about that. they have some great life-drawing classes if that's what you're into. i'm pretty sure it's a drop-in class...so you pay like 10 bucks everytime you wanna go and you just bring your own paper and supplies...they supply you with the naked person.

YOKO!!!... ok, I took this "art enrichment course" a couple years ago.. the teacher (Don Portelance) was a retired art teacher and was sooo good! (I wish I took more classes from him!).. Only thing is he lives in Coquitlam and I dunno how far u are from here~... But if u are interested I could give u the details...
I'm sure there's art courses around your area~ check out a local rec center and tell them your wanting to take an advanced art course and sometimes they'll know of some really good places that could help ya out! (that's how I found out about Don..) Also the Vancouver Film school I know has summer programs, but it's more the classical animation, 3d animation, etc.. type stuff... Or Emily Carr?... I've been thinking about going there next year.... *hummm* dunno if I should go to SFU 1st tho!... they -might- have drop-in type courses?.. happy hunting! hehe :p ~breezy |

yo breezy i don't know if you even drop here much any more,
but thx for the info.. emily carr next year? buddy, that's one of the things I'm thinkin bout as well.. on the same track as you.. but I'm really not so sure, I'm most likely goin to sfu or ubc next year, either or, cuz I have no portfolio or anything goin on so I'm probably gonna start one up after I grad but hey, good luck to you, and I miss posting with ya!! |
|
|||
^^hey dude! I don't really come to this forum anymore (as you've probably noticed).. I saw u signed the guestbook of my poor neglected website though, so I thought I'd drop by ;).. anyways, hope those helped you out..
well I don't even have a portfolio either!!.. but in jan I'll be applying to EC.. *eeks* wish me luck!... and good luck next year to you as well!.. I know you'll do well in whatever you pursue~ :) ~breezy btw, I've seen a couple of ur drawings around on this site.. they're soooo neat! I totally wanna see your sketchbook!!!.. post more! MOOOORE!!! hehe :p |

eciad is your best bet out here.
and the language they are talking ...
it's called artspeak. and only you can prevent it. take some summer/night courses there. you want the best dont you? it's tough to get in and stay in.. but it's well worth it.. why the hell would I stay in vancouver if it wasnt for ECIAD..? -R |
|
|||
Robin, thanx for the advice~ :)
I think I will take some night or summer courses there to get used to the way things work around there... I just hope I have what it takes...! *crosses fingers* Robin, is it your first year there? what are you taking?.. ~breezy |

^^^hehe... no worries, I did the same thing too!... my friend wrote ECIAD one day... and I wuz like whuuuuut de????... then I later realised it wuz the abreviation of it~ hehe... normally I'd jus call it 'Emily carr'... not the whole '...Institude of art and design'!
are you thinking of going there too? |

mrrrrrrrrr........
man I'm seriously considering some form of art school now...I'm so confused cuz I know my parents won't be too pleased with that... i don't like the thought that I'm trying to live up to their expectations, but they've supported me through so many things that I'd feel wrong to disappoint them.. People say that you should do what you love, but it's hard when there's a lack of support.. My sister says that if I want to do something then DO it, regardless of what they say cuz they'll have to live iwth it. But that's easy for her to say, she's in 3rd year @ ubc taking Commerce, and currently working for UBC. I doubt they'd be disappointed in her for that. a couple of questons arise.. if I DO apply, would I get accepted? if I do decide to apply when and how do I start a portfolio.. f I do get in, then what if I don't succeed, I fear failure.. and I know that's not the attitude... If I do get in then I might feel very disappointed in myself, after seeing so many talented artists... Art is a personal thing for me, so critisicism can hurt a lot sometimes if it was a persoal piece. if I do get in,what if my work isn't good enough.. (for the eyes of whom?) it all seems like a gamble but I can't imagine doing a job that i can't be passionate about. |

Im curious with yoko's questions as well....
robin- can u give me some info on the communication design progam at emily carr? i wanna go to ryersons for communications design...but my parents wont SUPPORT me.. damn asian parents with their typical cliche thinking... |

com design
well,
first of all you have to go through foundation, it's basically to show you all the basics of art.. then in second year you can APPLY to get into com design, it is VERY competitive.. over 250 people apply from within the school and out.. and only 45 are accepted.. once you are there you take things like typeography, digital design, drawing, art direction.. etc.. and you complete your 3 more years, 4 year DEGREE.. lot's of hard work .. but its worth it.. I know that they have tours every monday.. so if you are serious about going there you should at least check out the school and they can tell you all you need to know.. school is the last thing on my mind these days.. as I am finished for the summer.. 4 months off! sweet! well good luck you two. -R |

AAAHHHHH DID I SEE THE WORD DEGREE!?!?!??!?! i think my mom's gonna approve this!! omg im so excited right now. u dont understand my passion for this and i will totally take extra courses, do more thinking...do wuteva it will take to get in. hmmm im gonna think about the monday tour...neone wanna join me?
|
|
|||
haha bebu, i might be joining ya, i might have to go own my own cuz work gets in the way a lot but either way i might wanna check that tour out ;)
I'm not sure what I want to do but I knwo it involves some form of.. "art"... the more I think about it the more I wanna do it, thanks for the info robin. |
|
|||
that would be very cool if the three of us can go (look up @ breezy's post)
I'm still unsure if I can, it's all time-permitting, too bad thing they didn't have any tours on weekends or something tooo mrrr ;) but what day would you guy go if you would? |
|
|||
im pretty much free as a bird now...but, after 3 on weekdays.. i still have highschool to attend. and yes...weekends would be a lot better, but oh well.
i think it would be awesome if all of us artsy folks attend a tour just to get info and stuff. |
|
|||
the tours are every monday no?.... so I'm sure I could free up a monday after school one of these weeks.... or even later in june when we'd be outta school would be good..... I've been to a couple of the tours last year, but it would be fun if we could all go together to get info... that'd be neato if we all eventually got in and were in some of the same classes!
anyways... if u wanna go... whenever you guys are free, lemme know k? :) ~breezy |
