ok, i know im new and all, but what is this karma thing. my profile site thingy says that i have 40 karma points from two people. What is the deal with this. how do i get em, how are people giving them to me, somone help!!!

nope, but the green squares give people an idea of how much you have.

ok, so the difference between dark green and light green, and my total lack of them

you get the dark ones before the light ones. people haven't given you much karma yet, so you only have one square. it's really not very important.
