New rules possible for noisy restaurants in Vancouver
New rules possible for noisy restaurants in Vancouver
Jul, 08 2005 - 5:00 PM VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) -- Vancouver city hall's looking at cracking down on noisy restaurants by not allowing live entertainment past midnight. City staff say complaints about noisy restaurants have been increasing over time as the city’s density increases. So they've come up with a proposed set of revised rules including no live entertainment between midnight and 9 in the morning. They're also proposing the interior noise limit not exceed 90 decibels. The rules right now limit the number of live entertainers in a restaurant, but under the proposed changes, there is no limit. All of these ideas however must first be approved by council following public hearings. For its part, the BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association doesn't think the proposed policy is any big deal. Association president Ian Tostenson says come midnight, most restaurants are winding down business and customers at that hour are usually gravitating into pubs. He also says he doesn't know many restaurants that are creating a lot of noise after midnight, but on the other hand says many city-dwellers expect a certain amount of noise pollution. "I think people move into neighborhoods in condos and there's restaurants and nightclubs and I think, ya know, they certainly expect there's going to be a lot different activity and noise levels then they would if living in the suburbs." Tostenson says most businesses are sensitive to the people living around them and raising the issue for debate is a good idea. SOURCE |
