as someone who's been around the block with jobs.. i loved retail when i was in it, but now that i make more money and get consistantly more hours and go home extremly proud of my days work... retail was just difficult pain in the ass. i remember working at retail when i was at school, which means there were only certain amount of days/hours that i was available to work...and having the manager preshift and postshift about how much the store made and how much personal sales everyone made... it didnt really mean much..especailly when everyone didn't get commission or got any bonuses off "a crazy boxing day". non-commission retail to me means the store will tend to have less customer service.. money drives ppl to work harder, best incentive than anything else. never got the chance to work at a commission sales retail job, who knows..maybe if ure doing it, uhave a diff view to it.

Bev, I beg to differ.
I guarantee that my store provides the BEST (by far) customer service of any store at Metrotown, and my sales associates are in no way commissioned. Providing great customer service means hand picking the best people with the best personalities - commissioned sales people may provide good customer service, but it isn't genuine. |

I hate to be cynical, but bonuses etc are just a trick to get people working hard for DA MAN or whoever owns the business or is above you pulling strings.
You can bet that those people won't be working any harder! The idea is that you work harder and they get richer. Make your escape from the role of the wage-slave as soon as possible. Like me. I made $2300 US today and I don't even have a job, thank god for that :) |

There is ALWAYS a greeter, on Fri/Sat/Sun there are minimum 2, sometimes three. It's "customer" btw...we don't sell costumes! :P |

natalie, ure amazing at what you do, and im sure anyone that works for/under/with you are just as amazing as you are. but just think in a general matter for one second..
an employee that gets an extra MONEY reward for the hard work they do VS. an employee that gets a pat on the back for the work they do. i know id work harder and feel much better about myself if i know im getting a special bonus for it... am i the only money hungry person here? |
|
|||
my bonus is 'don't fuck up' based
an extra 10% of my salary paid out if i don't fuck up and cost the company money i think of it as overtime pay for thinking about work outside of work any other bonus system i find kind of insulting |
|

my bonuses are revenue sharing and strategic objectives. i set a bunch of goals at the beginning of the fiscal year and if i meet them that year, i get paid for them. plus a few smaller bonuses for "employee of the week" kind of things.

^ I wouldn't have made the statement if I didn't believe it to be honestly 100% true.
I am constantly shopping and recruiting at metrotown, and a lot of the stores have no focus on customer service whatsoever. Granted, if you walk into Bebe dressed to the nines you're probably guaranteed amazing service! But for all-around, non-judgemental warm, friendly service, and staff who actually care about the customers, I stand by my statement - my staff is the best. Bev, I think it totally depends on the person. I've worked for commission and I've worked in a team environment, and I can honestly say that I worked waaaaaaaaay harder in the team environment because I actually enjoyed my job and felt at ease, rather than feeling flustered and angry because other associates were trying to steal my sales! |

That sounds like a rad bonus Nat! And I'm sure that you can win it too. You might as well start planning what you'd buy @ Tiffany's or Coach, or what games you would buy for your PSP or what songs to d/l for your ipod. All great prizes, and you deserve any one of them. Go Natalie go!

People are spoiled. You are hired to a job not only to show up but to meet targets, goals and generally do what's expected of you. I think it's insane that people -expect- to be paid out just for doing their job. |

Bonuses aren't expected - they're given as a thanks/incentive to go above and beyond the goals set by the company. Edit: In defence of having greeters, they are essential to running an effective retail store. Not only do they welcome each customer and inform them of promotions/sales, they also prevent grab-and-run theft that is all too common. |
