i once ate two mcdonalds breakfast meal then attempted the grouse grind, needless to say, i didnt go non stop, in fact, i stopped 2/3 of the way up to vomit up a nice yellowish substance that im assuming were the eggs of the meal. so, lesson of the day is: dont hike on a stomach full of mcdonalds, oh, and go with someone that will stay with you when you say you feel like throwing up

You can hike to the top of The West Lion it's a class 3 climb
Which means "Rope up for Begginers". It's very easy to climb, I did it without a rope and I'm not a rock climber, you just gotta make sure you don't fall......or die! haha But seriously it's pretty easy, except for one scarey party, not difficult just exposed and you feel very high up The East Lion you need more technical skill to climb and have to use ropes etc I've never been up. There's a class 3 bush route you can take but I heard it's nasty, exposed and you need to rely on roots and branches some of the time.....sketchy! Before climbing the West Lion I suggest climbing Crown Mountain (Climb the Grouse Grind, to Goat Ridge, down the Valley then back up to the peak of Crown) It's a class 2 which means "a scramble" you gotta use your hands but a child can do it Brunswick Peak is also a Class 2 I don't know why that link above isn't working for you but try and get it opened lots of pics of Crown Mtn, Brunswick, The Lions etc This summer I got out to Garibaldi Lake and Black Tusk (for the 10th+ time haha) I love it up there, you been there? |

Hiking would be awesome... I haven't gone for a good hike in LONG LONG TIME, although I don't have any hiking boots, I suppose I could just use some good runners. The week of the 24th sounds like a good time, keep this thread posted on the upcoming details :D I live on the North Shore, so it would be sweet hiking around where I live if you're still thinking of going to Horseshoe bay?

Hey chewy! I use to really be in all the out door'sy stuff back in high school like hiking/canoing/kyaking/alpine sking/snowshoing with backpacks bigger than me and a good 20-40 km over night trips. Im probly not in as good condition as before, but I sure have the drive to try it again as id love to get back into it more.
Ive done the grouse grind a quite a few times over the years. Garibaldi lake is absolutly gourgouse at this time of the year (right by squamish). I believe its about a 9 km hike straight up to the lake. If you want to go more there are a tone of other trails to keep trecking such as Black Tusk and glaciers I remember bum sliding down LOL Otherwise im down wtih trying what ever else :) Im cool going any saturday or sunday. PS: my MEC card expired :( |

I know a friend who hiked the West Coast Trail by himself. Took him about a week.
I haven't done a serious, multi-day camping hike in a number of years... Last edited by dj_soo; Sep 11, 05 at 02:43 PM. |

^ That reminds me when my grade 11 class tryed the Juan da Fuca trail... after 5 days we gave in and refused to go any further. So we stayed an extra night at our last spot and sun taned the whole day LOL. But yeah I can imagine those trails are brutal! Mud up to our knees, harsh blisters, bruses, scratches, sleeping on hard pebble beaches, cleaning mud off in glacire rivers, daring over slipry log bridges over crazy rapid rivers with no rope... oh and the up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down for like 12 kms a day. Oh and then the school work on top of it... good times over all I guess.
chewy: sorry, just foudn this post today :( |
