high school issues??
ok, so I'm doing my community health portion of nursing school right now and part of my clinical involves teaching/putting together a workshop for highschoolers and possibly pre-teens.
for those who are currently in highschool, or even those who have just recently gradded, what kind of topics do you think would interest you? or better yet, what kinds of topics do you think would bore you? some ideas so far: -anything sex related (i.e. STD's, contraception, etc.) -body image -hygiene -stress management -drugs/alcohol -health/nutrition my goal right now is just to be able to find a topic that'll be useful and interesting for the students, so I hopefully don't bore them to tears.. suggestions? |

I know its overdone, but still...
DRINKING AND DRIVING or preaty much driving under the influence of anything. I hate this, too many people do it , and too many people die or get seriously injured as a result. If you can think of a way to like make kids smarten up more about this Id say go for it, you might save someones life. |

let the kids know that there is crystal meth cut in coke, and e. and go over the dangers of these drugs wit em. youd be surprized (or maybe not) how many kids that age dont realize that most the drugs out there are tainted with jib. It might be a bigger problem in small towns tho. The E and Coke up north is filthy filthy dirty cuts pretty much all the time.
ive just noticed that these three drugs in particular seem to reak havoc on way too many high school students. If more kids had access to real facts about the street drugs in their town, that they might be consuming. it might help a little bit in their choice making., |

I can agree with the warning about the evils of methamphetamines, if I'd known some more about it then I probly woulda made a few different choices back in my druggy days. Plus some of the horror stories are really interesting so definitely no worries about it being boring.

Again, this is probably overdone, but I think body image, especially with girls is SO important. You wouldn't believe how many of my friends were at one time or another trying to fix how they looked. To make it interesting, try the bit statistics thing. I know when I read those stats, they freak me out. Not to mention that there are some good documentaries, one called Killing me Softly, which really put out there what the media is doing to make people hate what they look like, guys too. Image is a big thing when you're a teenager and I am realizing it more and more because I work in a retail outlet (bootlegger) that caters to this need. It's scary how many of my friends have thrown up or starved themselves and these people on the outside, you wouldn't even think were like that(I thankfully didn't fall into the spiral :D). find some examples in the media and research some cool facts about it. It always is nice to walk away and learn something.
Another issue that I would suggest you to cover would be crystal meth and coke, and show the documentary through the blue lens. Anyways, hope that helps. |

back in the day... my hs had a presentation with randy (i forget his last name, maybe miller?) to show us some neat things about drugs and how they fucked up his life, in truth they werent really neat, but it made me realize the horrors of what a crack/heroin addict looks like. if anyone has ever seen this, do you remember the "hastings shuffle"? oh yea |

for the ladies - the truth about birth control pills. alot of ladies out there - in highschool or not - dont know what can make them less effective.
the only sex-ed talk i remember from highschool was a lady who came in and actually talked about having sex\how to do it properly when it comes to condoms, spermacide, ect.ect. stuck in my mind because we actually learned something you cant learn in biology and it wasnt a lecture it was more of a "i know youre probably doing it, so lets make sure you do it right." she didnt really focus on std's which was fine only because we had someone else come in and do a talk on them seperately. also if you get to talk to ladies by themselves - talk about regualr lady problems - yeast infections, bladder infections, breast abnormalities that are totally ok to have\totally not ok to have. first time i had a yeast infection or a bladder infection i didnt know what the hell was going on and was terrified. self image i think is a wonderful thing to talk about - but its most likely not going to get through to teenage girls - we were all there, its realllllly hard to accept yourself when youre 16. but still kudos for talking about it if you do, theres always that one or two who listen and learn. SMOKING. too many kids do it, and i thinks its awful due to the fact that our generation and their generation has been raised with the knowledge that it kills us.... get graphic about it. its an issue that is always stressed but fuck, stress it some more. drinking - he best drinking talk i ever had was actually in a lifeguard course. instructor asked if we had ever experinced someone unconscious or in an altered state, ect. and most people were saying no b\c our minds were on pool situations. then he asked how many people drank, how many people had seen friends pass out, how many people have broken up fights and so on. he then pointed out the danger of drinking, and slided right on into talking about rolling people who are unconscious and vomiting and the recovery position and so on. made me realize how dangerous drinking can be when it was presented in the first aide mannor. anyways - basically, i say work from experience - or as much as you can without getting yourself in trouble. i've just always personally had a better experience when the person seems like a real person rather then someone whos telling me what to do, if that makes sense. other then that, im sure you'll be fine. you have youth on your side - you'll be easier to relate to. |

Discussing other methods of treating depression besides the medicine that sponsored doctors and big corporations TELL you that you need. Such as exercise, realizing highschool isn't the end, hobbys etc.
Depression is such a huge thing in highschool and some meds have actually shown to increase the chances of suicide. So many kids have bad home lives which transfers over to school because of their passive secluded manor. Definately a big topic. |

hey, thanks for all your suggestions!
I met with the pre-teen group yesterday and they are sooooo adorable! they're from ages 8-11, and it was funny because one of the girls mentioned she wanted to learn about puberty and another girl went "ewwwww!" it's just kind of nice to know there's still some innocence in pre-teen girls nowadays. lol. I'll be meeting with the highschool kids in a couple of weeks and putting together a health fair project with my colleagues. I'm hoping I'll get to be the one to teach them about STD's! :D |
