Comic Books =)
anyone else an avid comic book dork like myself? like the kind of geek who has bookshelves stacked with graphic novels and box after box of comics and who gets into cold sweats if they aren't at the comic shop on wedn afternoon when the latest shipments come in???
comics are great. the artwork is inspiring, the stories can humble or excite or just give you a fantastic escape into fantasy. what do you read??? personally i love the indi work of Toni Millionaire, Marc Bell, James Kochalka and Dave Cooper among others. i'm also a huge fan of Dave McKean. but what i really love is the good old fashioned superhero. The Avengers, the Justice League, X-Men, the Ultimates, Wonder Woman, etc. speaking of wonder woman, has anyone been following what they are doing, esp with her, at DC?!?!? pretty amazing stuff. ps- anyone going to the comic convention this sunday on main street? |

i buy mostly TPB's now because im too busy to keep up with a series.
down with the usual classics (watchmen, dark knight), all the fank miller batman/sin city/wolverine stuff. as for the stuff i read now, a lot of emo girl shit. andi watson, craig thompson, adrian tomine, daniel clowes. i was up on a bunch of that 'Focus' imprint stuff on dc. Vertigo stuff. otomo (akira series is a re-reader, probably 5 or 6 times now) and shirow. i really like the Flight collections. i like interesting art styles and not really into the super books, like when i was a kid. i stick to mostly smaller imprints because i am an uppity nerd. i dont like reading a new book with hell of backstory that i need to reaquaint myself with. i think the last big superhero arc i dealt with was that x-men alternate universe book stuff, i didnt stick around to see how it turned out but im sure it was interesting. i just picked up the first 3 volumes of Walking Dead i wanna get into them asap. |

I used to collect all sorts of cool comics, not the typical spiderman/superman stuff. If I was around when those classic series began, I totally would have started collecting, but to start at issue 400 seems to me rather pointless. If I collect something I need to own every single one or else it pisses me off tremendously. I started collecting the Ren and Stimpy comics about 12 years ago and managed to hunt down every single one. Same thing goes for the Mortal Kombat series, those were wicked comics! I got into The Thing (the big rock guy from the fantastic 4) cause he was badass but the rest of the fantastic 4 were pussies. I've got a bunch of x-men and Wolverine comics, as well as a bunch of Punisher comics. Aside from that I have about 150 assorted random comics including about 30 #1 issues in a variety of different series.
I remember my first time doing acid when I was 13 years old, I came home around midnight and went straight to my room. I sat on my bed and looked over at my super nintendo, wanting to play Mortal Kombat 2, but didn't because I was afraid I'd get so caught up in the game that my parents would walk into my room, see me yelling at the t.v or something and I'd be totally busted. So instead I grabbed the newest mortal Kombat comic I had bought a few days before and started reading. Wow, that was so intense, I would actually hear the voices of the characters I was reading about, it was like watching a movie on paper. After that I tried to go to sleep, but ended up starring at my wall from about 1am - 5 am, having the most vivid transformers hallucination you could imagine. Oh the good old days! |

I highly recommend 'Lullaby'
The 'Lullaby: Wisdom Seekers' mini just finished up with Image comics and then moved over to Alias for an ongoing series. It's fun and has the fairytale gone grown-up aspect to it that makes it a good read. The art is top notch too. Image also debuted 'Fell' last month and it was REALLY good. Kind of a dark and gritty crime book written by Warren Ellis (who is ALWAYS good). It's got a cheap cover price too... only $1.99 US which is uber-cheap for a book these days! |
