Total scam man !

You do not need to ever "Replace" power steerin fluid !

Refill when empty yes.

Never pay to change yer oil dude !

It's one nut under yer car on the oil pan !

very simple.

Never use actual power steering fluid either.

Automatic transmission fluid will last twice as long !(instead of power fluid)

Trust me man that dudes mad tryin to rip you off !

Possibly the system might need to be flushed out. I can change it for ya Ang, pretty easy,

Or maybe you got it confused(or the mechanic did) on your transmission fluid. That needs to be changed more often, like every few years. Bring it over to my place and I'll do it for ya

there should twist cap somewhere under your hood, that isnt ur oil cap rad or breaks, that will be ur PS, just pop the cap or twist it off and add PS fluid done.

^ draining the old stuff is much more complicated though, usually have to jack up the car and find the drain screw, and its different on every car

Oh man.

There is absolutely zero reason to drain your power steering fluid.

i'm not even sure thats possible...lol.

All i know is Automatic tranny fluid will last 2 times as long as power steerin' fluid.

You're an idiot.
Your p/s fluid should be flushed and replaced every time you change the p/s pump.
The p/s pump transfers pressurized fluid to your rack and pinion or steering box to assist in, you guessed it, steering. Fluid is transferred through several valves and and is subject to contamination from metal shavings and other forms of general wear and tear in your rack&pinion or steering box, which are essentially two metal on metal gears grinding away every time you turn a corner.
Power steering fluid does acquire 'wear', like every fluid in your vehicle.
A lot of cars steel pressure from the power steering system to help apply brakes through the master cylinder and booster, which works your p/s pump all that much harder.

Quote:
Refill when empty yes.
P/s fluid just just doesn't disapear. If it's empty, it's time to ask yourself "where is the fluid going?" Power steering is a pressurized hydraulic sytem. If you have a leak power steering will a) be compromised [ever try manual steering in a 1 ton?] and b) if let to the point of running completely dry and letting air in the lines and pump, will pretty much never sound normal again, even after purging the lines.

Quote:

that'd just be draining the resevoir dude, the fluid needs to be flushed out of the rest of the system or you pretty much did a half assed job. Don't let that resevoir run dry or you'll end up with air in your lines, which sucks.

Don't forget to change the oil filter and grease applicable joints (tie rods, ball joints, etc) using chasis or specified grease.

It costs $3-5 for a litre of power steering fluid. It costs about the same for Tranny fluid. You can use tranny fluid if you like and chances are your vehicle will be alright. Note that there are several types of tranny fluid and not all will have desirable effects on your p/s system. P/s systems get worn, that's simple. If you take even mediocre care of your vehicle and don't drive like a fucking idiot it's normal to have to replace your pump and fluid 50 000 k-100 000k, sometimes less, sometimes longer.

Quote:

The major cost of replacing the fluid is labour, not parts. It's probably only going to cost you 10-15$ for the fluid to flush the system and 30-45 min to actually do it. He's probably going to disconnect your return hose, put it into a bucket, and turn the steering wheel back and forth while feeding new fluid into the system until the fluid is flushed. It's not a hard job. Don't fuck with your pressure hose (the one with metal reinforcement goint out of your p/s pump), especially while the car is running. Either find a friend who knows what he's doing or get a second oppinion.. Also, shop around. Pull into a place like lube x or midas or any other oil change place and ask them to check your power steering level and quality. They'll let you know in 3 seconds and it won't cost you a dime.

What costs you 70$ now might save you 700-2000+$ shortly down the road on a new rack/pinion and p/s pump and lines.

just use the surrey alleyway method; make sure to use an umbrella though.. crank the wheel with the cap off and engine running and watch it fly!

If it was a mechanic recommending it, i'd say go get it changed. It could save you some big $ down the road. It's not something he or the shop is going to make a lot of money on.

If you feel comfortable with what you're doing, do it yourself. It's not hard, but don't fuck around with something if you don't know what it's for. It's easy to get hurt and make a mess around high pressure lines.

I'd do it for $35 plus cost of fluid but i won't be in Van until January.
It should be done before it starts to get cold. Shitty deal pal.

I'm not too sure actually, I didn't get into cars until this last year.
Ask your parents or friends if they know an alright shop. If worse comes to worse, price shop. Give a couple places a call and ask how much it'll cost.
