Building a new Computer [specs]

Feel free to voice any thoughts on other hardware. Keep in mind this is a bare bone setup to get started on.

Additional features like CD Roms, keyboards, monitors, graphics and sound cards will all come later. Spend the bulk to get up and running, add as you go along.

This is a graphics machine. Built not for 3D rendering but multitasking of resource thirsty applications and largescale print work.

Seagate? well I donno a bunch aboot HD's what would you recommend. I recall some computer store guy talking about a 8000rpm bottleneck, but I don't even think im quoting him right.

As for parts, im most likely going to take a ride down Broadway and stop at Atic. They priced out about $200 cheaper then Ncix for the same parts. But the tower, that a special order online. Couldn't find it local.

if you're on a budget get a seagate barracuda 7200.8, any size. cheap, quiet, fast
slightly slower are the WD caviars, louder, cheaper, 5yr warranty + sata2 (pointless)
if you're a dot-com-millionaire get WD raptors, they'll always be the fastest until someone puts out a 10k SATA drive

if you're bored get 3x or 4x smaller sata drives and raid-5 them since your mobo supports it

I have been informed that the new 2X AMD chips (however better) are still minimal on the amount of applications that can take full advantage of them. So a reccomendation was to go with the 3700 can save nearly half off my chip costs, then double up on my ram. Thoughts?

Nice setup.

You should take a look at the Hitachi drives that are coming out. SATA II :y:

Also make sure you get a good power supply. You'd be surprised as to how many stability problems in computer just come from a shity power supply. don't cheap out!

I'd stick with the dualcore. Both AMD and Intel have been trying to persuade game developers and software distributers to take advantage of the dual-core setup. I'd rather be ahead of the game then have to make a rather tedious upgrade later on. As with your ram, I would have gone with 2gb from the start.

Looking around im trying to find a SATA2 w/ 16MB cache, without luck. I can find one or the other. Hitachi's Deskstar does rock both, but the only models I can find are 500GB for over $400. Perhaps someone could link me to some options under $200.

My attempts are to keep the inital bare bone cost under something like 1300 before tax. However nice to be ahead of the game, it does cost the extra money do so. Plus the full advantage of being ahead never really plays out until X amount of months thereafter buying. By then they are 3 steps ahead. Well my original gameplan was not to stick with only a gig, bare bone starter box ;)

Not sure if this is a typo though 80GB seems too small now days.

The 500GB is sweet but way to expensive!!

The other thing to look for is a hard drive with NCQ ...i think Seagate HDs have these ( Raptor? )
