the one year film course is around $25,000.....but from what i've heard you don't really end up anywhere.......i have a friend who did the capilano film course (which also didnt do much for him) and he got some jobs as a PA (Production Assistant) on a few movies through a friend and there were VFS grads doing the same bitch work he was doing. And my friend could hook me up with a PA job without even any education .....if you really wanna do anything you might want a university degree....or really apply yourself after gradding from one of the other courses

Thing is, i just finished my sound engineering courses, and i think im having a change of heart. I really dont think engineers now a days are going to get much work since everyone is doing their own shit on their personal studios (pc+monitors+software).. Thinking about Film production, ill take a look at this Cap. College course tho, Thanks to everyone for replying oh so very quick. Cheers.

I took a part time Film Production course at VFS and 1 year at CapCollege. The teachers have the experience at VFS but 10 months of VFS is definitely not worth 25 grand. A year at Cap will run you $7500, which in my opinion is all you need to get started in the industry. You've also got the option of continuing onto a 2 year diploma or 4 year degree at Cap if you want.
Also I've just noticed you're in the UK. They've got some great programs over there. Might want to check out London Film Acedamy and I think Brighton's got an awesome program as well. As soon as I get some money together thats where I'm headed. Last edited by FMPjunkie; Oct 14, 05 at 03:12 AM. |

Don't take a film course with the expectation of getting a job in film.
You can do that, on your own, working your way up, like most other people did. Take a film course if you love story-telling through the combined visual and sound mediums. Take it because you want to learn the basics in how to make a movie. Take it because you love it! Otherwise, it's a lot of cash spent unwisely. Frosty (making a somewhat living) |

rio: if you want a job, email me your resume.
I can guarantee you will learn MORE on an actual working film set than having to spend years in film school. And I believe you brits operate in a different capacity than us North Americans. According to MI6 director Bharat Nalluri, whom I had the opportunity to work with recently. As long as you're competent and can follow instructions, I'll put you to work as a Production Assistant. Do the time and see where you want to go from there. I do have to warn you though; individuals seeking to work their way up the chain of command without going through the proper channels will find themselves out of a job. Narc, u serious?
Im not actually brit, im Canadian just out here completing my courses and such. If VFS is as terrible as it sounds, i think i might look heavily into Cap. College. $7500 aint bad. Thanks again for everyones quick replys :D |

VFS is said to be the highest recomended Film School by the industry.
working here i get millions of phone calls and personal contacts asking for students and grads to work. We dont garuntee students any jobs but we now have a Student Sercives department where they keep all of the job requests and help grads get the jobs they are looking for. VFS has the largest number of grads working in the film industry. please see www.vfs.com for more information, grad projects and Showcase awards. |

Hmmm, from what i'm reading i don't think the argument is whether or not VFS is a good school! like bri said "VFS is said to be the highest recomended Film Schools by the industry"!
point and case is that the film industry is a lot like narc is stating! you start from the bottom most of the time and work your way up and gain contacts in the industry. i have a friend from highschool that started with shit jobs even when his mom was the producer of the show.......but a few years later he's assistant directing and some other stuff i'm sure not to understand but he's making huge coin and he never spent a penny on school! i'm not sure how educated my response was(hahaha), but just a story to back up what i've heard countless times! |
