State of the Environment 2005
The David Suzuki Foundation recently released my research group's latest environmental study "The Maple Leaf in the OECD: Comparing progress toward sustainability" to much fanfare. The original study,"Canada's Environmental Record: An Assessment" contains tonnes of 'hard' numerical data for anyone doing research in the environmental field or just simply wants to know about Canada's environmental record over the last 10 years, compared to other industrialized countries. The project looked at 23 environmental indicators and ranked Canada almost last amongst its peers.
Long and the short of it: We've made no progress toward being a 'sustainable' country. Our honourable Environment Minister shot back at the report claiming it was based on 'fuzzy science', asserting that Mexico couldn't possibly be ahead of Canada in terms of the environment. He asks retorically "Would you want to drink the water in Mexico or here?" Sadly, the lackys giving the minister the Coles notes on this report failed to get across that the ranking of 28/30 was a cumulative ranking. That is a very sad thought. People in Canada are woefully ignorant and, worse, lazy. I once heard (I don't know if this is reliable) that Canada was one of the top countries for producing garbage - that we do not reuse anything or recycle enough. Perhaps if ppl would get it into their heads that nothing can last going like this, and we all need to do something about, we might get somewhere... brings in mind one of my favorite quotes:
"We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children." |
