Teachers vote to go back to work tomorrow!

It was just anounced that 77% of teachers voted to go back to school as they agree with the terms made on Friday.

Although I think most of the teacher feel the're still not getting enough of what they wanted or need... but are still happy to get at least somthing out of this strike and have made the public more aware about whats going on in the public schools.

ps: just called into a week long position too WOO HOO!!!

You totally beat me! Haha, it's all good. So back to school kiddies! And remember, appreciate your teachers and all they do for you! Or at the very least, be GOOD when you go back :)

what was the final result of the vote? are they upping pay? lowering class size? anything positive? I haven't been able to find much about it in the news, strangely enough.

I think the government puts what was it another 20 mill to school books and shit another 40 mil to wages I think and that they will discuss class sizes with teachers. Which in the end means nothing.

100 million this year and a promise to bargain about wages/class sizes later.
Premier Gordon Campbell pointed out the teachers paid for the 100 million, as the government saved $160 million by not paying striking workers.

There is no promise to bargain on Class size there is a promise to consult with teachers but that really means jack all

So then basically the teachers gave $60 million of their wages to the government for no reason.

Yeah. You only strike when you're prepared for the long-haul to get at least some of your demands.

What the teachers have taught us:
They can go on an illegal strike because they think the strike laws are stupid.
Therefore by the same logic, we can refuse to do our homework if we believe it's stupid.

<edit> Using the above logic will probabaly get you into alot of shit with teachers, but feel free to mention it to them. </edit>

Woh carful there... I believe the teachers decided to strike even if they were breaking the law, had more to do with standing up for what they believe in and morals.

And no, not everyone is mad at the teachers. Infact they interviwed some parents who are disapointed and wish they fought harder to get it all. However if I was voting I probly would of voted yes... understanding that both the government and teachers gave a little and won a little. I hope the governemnt can continue to work in a fair way when they talk again in the spring and also when cupe's contract come up in 6 months!?!

I was watching the news this weekend and when the teachers were holding thiere rally in Cloverdale a parent stood up and spoke his mind on the subject at hand apparently the union didn't wanna hear what he had to say so thiere security grabbed him and dragged him out of the Stetsun Bowl. So are they saying it is only ok to stand up and voice an opinion when it is in their favor? The actions that I saw made me loose any bit of respect I had left for that union and their actions. Extremely hypocritical if you ask me.

Though the teachers did win somthing equal pay across districts thats about the brunt of what they won it seems.

Maybe their will to go back to work increased after the government said they can't get strike pay from the union.
People will strike, but not for free.

ooh and the logic thing was more of a joke.

We were at both rallies (coliseum + the Stetson bowl) on Friday, and I have to admit, that on the long haul home, there was a strong feeling of dejection. The "rousing" speeches of union heads were at the time, emotion evoking and spirit injecting, but in retrospect the shadow of hypocrisy was ever present.

The crowds at both rallies were energetic, and determined, and were especially loud in cloverdale, but I think really at the core, it was a group of teachers who knew that their fight was coming to a premature end, and that it would be without any considerable concession.

Realistically it is up to rankinfile members to continue the fight, to toss corrupt and dishonest leadership to the curb, and continue their struggles anew. I am still waiting for some factual accounts of what the result of the vote is, but I and many others I’m sure still support the BCTF and other unions fully, but it was clear from the very beginning that the latest strike had to go all the way, and it didn’t.

The support of CUPE members was awesome, but it was also a tactic on the CUPE leaderships part, they now they will be in the same fight within the next year. The BC Labor Fed essentially SCREWED EVERYONE, and dropped their support in the early moments of Friday morning. I’m sure more than a few thousand union members cursed them to hell throughout the day, and although I’ve been pushing unity just as much as the next person, I cant help but feeling a similar sentiment myself.

The nasty truth of it all was that the TWU strike was suffocated before the BCTF strike action really got going, and the same thing happened with the BCTF before there would be any chance for CUPE to begin their job action in earnest. Divide and conquer, if all the unions where able to collectively have their job action in full swing, it would mean disaster for any attempts of the provincial government to carry out their agenda of draining away all but the ornamental powers of unions..

But this is not the end, BCTF members on a whole (the representation I saw and talked thoroughly with on Friday) feel they have been betrayed, "sold down the river" and had their fight essentially shit on. But with the support I witnessed for BC teachers at the MAWO rally on Saturday, I know this will not be the end.

Every victory for the provincial government increases the difficulty of the fight for rights by ALL union members, and all working people in general. But the last few years have brought a collective consciousness alive, paired with a sense of a need for definitive change unseen in the last few decades. So I believe in my own heart, and I know many others do, that before the end of next summer the workers of BC will take to the streets again, alongside students, parents and supporters of the rights of the working peoples of BC and the lifeblood of the province, carrying on where they had left off.

I have much respect+love for all the BCTF, CUPE, HEU, TWU and other working peoples and the battles you have and will continue to wage

Perhaps getting a better acount of the past and current events revolving around the strike might be beneficial.

From the "facts" and opinions i have gathered legislation was passed preventing further strike action of BCTF members before they even strated full scale job action - (they were only undertaking administrative job action at the time) BCTF assests being frozen soon followed.

It is important to note that the "popular" opinion of BCTF members was "they were fully perpared to strike as long as neccessary" prior to today. Perhaps it was wishful thinking?

There is still the half a million dollar fine reprtedly slapped on the BCTF as well, which i have yet to hear about, - whether it will still be expected to pay?
