Thinking about becoming a bartender.....
..............on weekends.
see, i wanna occupy my time in a constructive manner. plus, i have not been in school since i dropped out when i was 17, so i think that taking some other form of education would be beneficial for me. plus, i'll make killer good money in tips, i'll be eligible to take a flair bartending course upon completion of a introductory course, and best of all, HOT GIRLS WILL PAY ME TO GET THEM DRUNK!!!! so what are your thoughts? can you realistically see me as a bartender? or not. |

Most places won't hire you as a bartender right away. They make you work your way up from porter to bar back and then to bartender. Just because you went to 'bartending school' (which I think is a huge waste of money...you can learn all the same things from a bartending book) most places want you to have experience before you jump behind a faced paced bar.
This is all unless you happen to know the right person in the bar buisness. That is how I started bartending right away when I turned 19. I just left the sports bar/nightclub for Milestones. And even tho I have plenty of bartending experience, they still made me serve for 3 weeks before throwing me into the bar. All said and done...the money is great. However..the hours suck...and I REALLY hate drunk bar people who think they are your best friend when they want free drinks. Plus being in the industry is great when you want to go be that drunk jackass. The more people you know..the better you are treated! |

As for bartending on a cruise ship..I looked into it. Working 12 plus hour days in a bar that only has people in it at night doesn't really seem too appealing to me. And I'm not a huge fan of tip pools. You bust your ass to make huge tips but hardly see any of it becaue it gets shared between everyone. On alot of cruise lines...the tip is included int he bill..so the chances that you get tipped above and beyond that...are slim. Plus..who actually knows if you see any of that addd tip.

i have served and worked behind a bar before,so i am not totally unexperianced. the thing is in Ontario it is MANATORY that you take a bartending course and the equvelant of "serving it right" here in order to bartend at most clubs and resturants. so i can either serve part time for three years then take the course, or i can take the course and serve for a certain amount of time, then get a job in the bar. i just want something to pass the time on the weekends, and be able to save up money for my bussiness. Are you hot and presentable??? I love bartending and actualy miss it. However the hours really suck... your always working weekends and late nights. Often the hours arnt in stone as youll be let off early if its quite or have to stay later if its busy. I also sugest making sure you have at least one day off a week. At first most ppl think they can handle it, but I think most get sick of it pretty quite when they realize they dont have a life anymore. *edit* oh you do have experince... then yeah maybe you should try the course. Although I did know one guy who took the course and I believe end'ed up as a dish washer at earls and is now a cheff there. However if you really want to do this as a possible carreer for now than go for it and good luck. But I kind of agree with ashley as the course is a waste of money. I think alot of your skills have to do with your time and experince as a bartender. Reality is alot of bar tenders are too busy at times to really show off their tricks. As for me I learned most of what I know just worker and learning from other bartenders... and costomers. Last edited by Ree Fresh; Oct 24, 05 at 10:57 PM. |

once again i'll repeat myself. it is manatory that you take a course if you want to bartended in clubs if you have not bartended in Ontario before, so it is not like i really have a choice in that department. i also know and am willing to work weekends (that was kinda the whole point of taking up this kind of job in the first place.......)
on the other hand, i do realize that i also do not want to over burden myself with work. i'm going to be asking for shifts on friday and saturday evenings, so i can take sundays off no matter what. i just want to take this job to save up money to start up my renovations bussiness here in Mississauga. |

Good luck to you and if you or any other aspiring bartenders in training, need a guinea pig to test your drinks on, I'm always available.
I actually heard from a few buddys that have thier certificates, that there are only 3 ways to get a job as a bar tender: 1.Have a friend or relative who's willing to hire you. 2.Have 10+ experience as a bartender, which is hard to do if no one gives you that first break. 3.Be a really hot chick. Apearantly even the hot chicks who suck at making drinks, still get the job because there is nothing hotter than a sexy bitch with mad clevage handing you liquor. And it's true. |

just a few thoughts from someone who has spent over a decade in the industry, and had and have a few good friends who are still plugging away in it-
1.) most of the "top" bartenders in this town, have never been to "bartending" school 2.)weekend gigs are at a premium, so get ready to spend some time working your way up as a busser, barback, weekday batender 3.)its a "who you know" kinda gig as much as its a "work your ass off" and "be good with the costumers" kinda gig 4.)the club route will eventailly make you a good amount of cash, but may burn you the fuck out before you get there 5.)be humble to point, put in the work and listen, but also realize that a lot of bartenders are doing well these days becuase they got their own style, charm, swagger, humour etc. so work with what ya got, whatever that is 6.) there are more sketchy, and sadistic club/bar/restaurant owners in this city that homeless people! so do your research, talk to friends, listen to what heads have been telling you around the industry, go into places where your thinking of working and have a looksy, ask some question, do some recon - ya dig 7.) asides from the sadistic, and the sketchy there are also the owners who dont know what the fuck they are doing, so until the doors shut down because of NO MONEY, youll be in your own personal hell, so once again do your research, if they are TOO nice, everyone is skimming, and it aint going to be open for long 8.) i change my mind, if your digging school, then do it, i dont like to knock on any oppurtunity to learn, but akin to my own paths as a chef, make sure you get a good mix of school, and out in the field. 9.)dont fuck with peoples money, as far as good bartenders are in this city, you get busted in one bar, your chances of getting an equal or better job anywhere else pretty much got tossed with the last shot of the night 10.) just like any restaurant, bar, club job, theres the good times, and the crazy stories, but it is mos def not 24/7 happy happy joy joy 11.)watch your own consumption of booze, and drugs, things can get ugly real fast- good luck bro! i just realized your back east, so disregard anything that was specific to van, but other than that, please tak no disrespect, but, think about getting your ass back in school-(yeah i know i sound like a dad) you gots all the time in the world to join the work force, it aint going no where, so go part time school, and figure that shit, fuck renovations, be the fucking engineer/designer/head contractor/architect peace+'spect fable |

A lot of people want to be bartenders man - what have you got that's going to make a manager hire you? Skills, education, or experience? |
|

skills i can acquire, education, well im trying to work on that, experience i do have.
fable, the info you gave was very constructive thank you, but one thing to everyone who has been in the industry for + year like myself. 1.) i am aware i will not start in the bar. i have very little experience behind a bar, so i know that will not happen right away. 2.) this is more or less something to occupy my time on weekends. this is not a career move, though while i am working, i will treat it like one. 3.)Things are different here in Ontario. You have to have a bartending course in order to bartend in most clubs or restaurants in Ontario. That is the last time i repeat that. 4.) i have worked in the service industry since 1999, so i understand what i am getting myself into. the politics, expectations of employers, tendencies of people in the industry, fluctuation of high and low business and the risk involved in working to companies with frequent changes in revenue, etc. |
