Call for outside review of man's death
Call for outside review of man's death Last updated Nov 4 2005 08:34 AM PST
CBC NewsThe B.C. Civil Liberties Association says an independent review is needed, after a man was shot in the head a week ago while in RCMP custody in northwestern B.C. Ian Bush, 22, died on Oct. 29 after a violent struggle with an RCMP officer at the Houston detachment. Bush's family says police have only told them that he died from a gunshot wound to the head. But the BCCLA says the family and the public have a right to know exactly what happened. And it's filing a complaint with the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP, a civilian oversight group. "Police have a tough job but when there's such tragic consequences, police's conduct needs to be assessed," says the BCCLA's Murray Mollard. "There should be a thorough, fair review of RCMP conduct when these kind of incidents arise. You know, we give police tremendous powers and authority, but they need to always remain accountable to the citizenry." The RCMP and the coroner are doing their own investigation into the shooting. But Mollard says the public complaints commission should do its own review every time someone dies in police custody. "You need to have the review on an individual basis so at least you can begin to see if there are concerns about patterns, you can begin to establish those patterns, if there are problems on a more systemic level." A memorial service will be held on Saturday in Houston. Bush's grieving relatives have set up a fund in his honour to be used for legal fees. To those who havent heard this story yet; The man who was shot was in police custody for providing a minor with alcohol. See he was with a teenaged kid at some game of some sort, the underage kid had open alcohol and was drinking. When the police came to confiscate it, the kid said it was his 22 year old friend's alcohol, and they arrested the 22 year old. He never came back. So all for some lame liquor charge this kid gets shot in the head? Something doesnt sound right here... Last edited by -evil-duerr-; Nov 07, 05 at 06:36 PM. |

Its obviously pure murder.... I mean face it... these people are trained on how to use their firearms, they are specifically trained on where to shoot. Everybody knows that a bullet to the head is lethal, and to shoot one in the head involves either a point blank range or accuracy from a certain distance.... Keep in mind it was a handgun that was used.... There are certain times when lethal force has to be used by law enforcement such as hostage situations or when they feel that there life is being threatened.. But come on this was a 20-22 year old.... And even at that they(rcmp) are trained only to hit the chest area.....
Besides they were at the station.... typically the safest area... as far as I am concerned officers should remove their firearms while in the station. I mean look at the options there are available.... stun gun.... pepper spray.... And the rcmp cannot fuckin cry saying that they didn't have any pepper spray or didn't have a stun gun..... But in the end... they are going to get away with it..... |

yeah, apparently when his friends came to pick him up from the tank, they got threatened by the police when they asked for him...
and there was an ambulance there, but they didn't think that it had anything to do with the guy... obviouslly... who would for such a minor cause of arrest |
