LightScribe is the shit..

I got my BenQ lightscribe burner finally working, I must say it adds a slick level of customization to burning CD's. If you have heard of it or interested, pick one up for under $100 from Furtureshop.. or like $60 from Atic. Seriously badass hardware.

For everyone who doesn't know what im talking about, Lightscribe is a special CD/DVD burner which allows you to burn grayscale images into the reverse side of special blank media.

doesn't it require special media to do that? and you can only write in unused space?

yeah you need lightscribe media with a special burn side
a full cd grayscale burn will take about 30min

you can get single layer dvd lightscribes, they are moderately priced
I bought 30 single layer lightscribe dvd's for 37$ on ebay
no luck on finding dual layer ones yet

worth checking out, I'll post some pics of some I made when I get a min
very cool tech

Its cool stuff, a real good promo option, but unless you get the media off ebay, i've heard it costs an arm and a leg at places like future shop

I've had my lightscribe drive for a few months. No more pissing around with labeling anymore. A great investment.

why not just buy a printer for under 100-115$ that prints directly onto any printable media?

color to boot, and you dont have to buy their media prolly a little bit quicker too.

epson r200 (115$) also color for these things are dirt cheap (if you know where to look, i sure as hell do) and they seem to last quite some time.
i usually get about 55-70 color discs printed, plus my regular use per color cartridge.

Personally....... If your only going to do it for personal labeling and stuff ya its cool and such.... if your an artist and such and want to have your cd's labelled its not worth the time because depending and the shit your going to copy onto it it can take a while. And besides you have to get special cd's to etch the image onto it. And I'll let you into a little internal secret.... The lightscribe technology again will change sometime in the summer of 2006 but this time it will consist that you can actually burn an image but in color...

Humm, don't you mean v1.2 of Lightscribe media will introduce 5 color background CD's instead of the gold here in NorthAmerica. There was numerous delays in launching the first grayscale versions of the hardware I wouldn't hold your breath on any full color spectrum burning anytime soon. Personally im waiting for EtchaScribe updates, were you can just shake the CD and erase the image. ;)

it's cool... but time consuming... I think I'll stick with my black sharpie for labelling my CDRs/DVDs
