HIV ad in Globe and Mail

says that every two hours someone in canada is infected by HIV. i knew it was a problem before obviously, but i never knew the infection rate was that high. pretty shocking actually if it's true.

i got tested last january. i didn't have any reason to think i had it, but i realized i had never been tested and probably should. i think it's a good idea to go if you've never been before.

Jake, you mentioned that movie Kids in another thread.

I watched it, when I was 16. It scared the living crap out of me. Now every year I go to the doctor and make him check for everything. Just because of that movie. It doesn't matter if I have been doing it or not. My doctor thinks I am insane.

^it was actually watching that movie that planted the seed in my brain that i should get tested for HIV just for the hell of it. i'm a pretty neurotic person so i began to obssess about it and the only way for me to stop thinking about it was to get tested.

i know this isn't in the downtown area...and maybe it's only for UBC students, but the hospital there i find really good and i like all of the doctor's that i've seen there. i think it's open to everyone, so you might want to go down and make an appointment.

it's nice that it's a full hospital too, because you have to get a form from a doctor before you get an HIV test and once you get the form from the doctor you can just walk down the hallway and give it to the blood people and do it all in the same day and building.

Gusto, if you are under 24 you can go to any youth clinic. Which are far more supportive than a doctor any day.

i'm 25, but thanks. thanks for the suggestion, jake, just a bit out of my way and i'm not at all familiar with the ubc campus. maybe i'll check out the robson street medical clinic, since it's close to home. was just wondering if anyone had any personal experiences with any nearby, my current doctor is still on the island.

12 ppl a day
that's what, a little over 4000 new infections a year, which isn't very high compared to other countries

i worked at a clinic on the downtown eastside two summer ago, everyone has hiv there. it's really disturbing. most of them got it through iv drug use, though, not through unprotected sex

there's also a clinic on davie street that has really good hiv services (ranging from testing to treatment). if you're not a homophobe, i'd suggest checking that one out. not all doctors are comfortable dealing with the subject of hiv, but the ones at that clinic are experts.

that doesn't sound like being paranoid at all!

it can take up to 6 months for HIV antibodies to show up... so if you're engaging in high-risk activities, even getting tested every 6 months would seem pretty reasonable to me.

i know a guy who went to get tested and the doctor told him that he was wasting his time, and that it's people like him who are abusing the medical system and making it harder for people who really need help. what a ridiculous outlook.

LOL. sounds like that doctor was bitter at something else, and decided to take it out on your friend... unless the dr. in question was just a jackass.

In America Blacks and Homosexuals have the highest rate of infection.

Here in Canada it's Eskimos and Hikers.
