umm it's called DD
we take turns though i have only done it once since june LOL however, i have issues with people who drink excessively and drive. this is due to the fact my dad's best friend's wife was killed last 1.5 years ago at 3pm in the afternoon by a drunk driver. |

haha, this poll is funny. i voted "i drive carefully"
as opposed to anytime im NOT driving back from a club, where im driving recklessly also, why would they make roadchecks that are easily avoidable? i went through a roadcheck once with a few friends, it totally caught us off guard, and we were sort of scared of getting stopped and pulled over, but we ended up getting missed through the whole check, the cops were checkin every car but i guess they just miscommunicated about which cars had been checked, so we just drove right through. man was i relieved. |

Can't we all just stop drinking and driving?
It's not "fun" nor "cool." I don't see why people have to do it. Find a DD, take a cab, bus home, sleep over at someone else's house. There are many ways to get around it. It's not necessary. If you live far away and absolutely have to drive home, then at least hang around downtown and sober up. Why do some people ignore the drinking and driving horror stories? Are they in a state of disbelief and need for something bad to happen to them before they realize how stupid it is? |

At one point a few years back it was reported that the lower mainland had the highest rate of drinking and driving related deaths in the entire world.
Im not to sure about the truth of this statement but i grew up in a large cirlce of friends, where drinking and driving was as common as well drinking or driving! Atleast 30 of my close friends have been in accidents, and the number of people with dui's is almost the same. I got in a very serious accident a while back, flipping my car over 6 times, and walking out with a chip fracture in my neck and some torn ligaments in my knee. I remember being in traction at Royal Columbian, having to piss in a bottle! There was no charges laid against me, and the insurance coverage was comperable. I remember a nurse coming up to me while half coscious in traction and whispering in my ears, for quite some time in an extremely intense voice telling me how lucky i was, that my blood alcohol level was close to .27, and started ranting about what if i hit someone. She scared the living shit out of me, and had all the right to do so!!! Its seems just so automatic and easy for people to do, It never hits home until someone dies, these days. Perhaps having later skytrains, would help, but realistically i dont see this having a major impact. I know its somewhat hypocritical to say, in light of my past run ins with drinking and driving or letting others do so, but i think the only solution at this point is really throwing the book at offenders?!? Anyways, i hope everyone's got a safe ride home locked on newyears, it always helps to plan in advance. Debauchery=good, debauchery followed by driving=dead. |

I think that most people really believe they have driving down pat, like it's like riding a bicycle and you either get it or you don't. Some people truthfully drink and drive all the time and feel like they have mastered it. It's pretty baffling to me, but then again I have no experience doing it, so I'm not really in the place to say shit. I believe that a lot of people really feel like if they're not 'stupid' about it nothing is ever going to happen to them, not even realizing that driving drunk is stupid and incredibly selfish. The truth is, everybody in their life WILL be affected by drunk driving, it may not be them personally, it may be someone in their family, a friend, a coworker or a close acquantience. I've recently had to say goodbye to an old friend and it was really the first time I've really been affected by it, and it was hard to deal with because it was a split second decision for him and only 10 minutes earlier rejected a ride home from someone who wasn't drinking. I feel awful about his death and that his family had to say goodbye to him at such a young age, but I also feel really bad for the driver, a good friend of his that will have to live with one stupid decision for the rest of his life. And yeah, if you can afford to go to the club, you can AFFORD A CAB RIDE HOME. |

What I don't get is why the skytrain doesn't run past club hours, I think that it would greatly reduce the amount of people that are drinking and driving; One point that I can think of money to run it of course... Perhaps though is the Gov. gave some aid to the skytrain it would be able to reduce amounts of $$ put towards having the sheer man power at roadblocks and cruising about looking for drunk drivers and the mayhem they cause when they do eventually hit someone or something.

when ever i go to a club/rave/party I'm DD, I enjoy partying sober so it doesnt bother me. Occasionaly ill drink, but when i do, I only have one or 2 throught the whole night, and ill also drink lots of water.
Its just not worth it to me to loose my licence, or worse, have an accident and have someone killed, plus its healthier :) |

Breezing through this I get the impression that only one side of this issue is actually posting.
Seriously everytime I drove to after hours I had about six people in my car. They could have cared less if I was drunk or sober they just wanted get rolling. It's not just the driver who says yes and supports the action, it's also his passengers. |

I agree. I would never get in a car knowing the driver was intoxicated. And I would do everything in my power to not let anyone else on, if not convincing the guy not to drive.
I'm not sure if we have it here, but my friend works for Keys, Please in Alberta (I think) and it's a service where they take your car and give you a ride home and they drive your car there as well. I think it's an excellent idea. |
