Is anyone here on a gluten free diet?
I'm anaemic, always been.
I'm also a vegetarian and no, if I start eating steak it isn't going to go away because my mother is also anaemic. It seems that no matter how much iron, folic acid, b12 whatever I take my body can't absorb it so I'm considering going another naturopathic route which is to go on a gluten free diet. Just curious of peoples experiences, if any. Thanks in advance. |

I'm anemic and vegetarian and have been meat free for 10+ yrs.
I'm trying very hard to ease myself off of wheat and gluten because both things seem to do numbers to me, I feel tired after I eat, gain and lose weight very oddly and sometimes inexplicably, and get the general icky feeling in my tummy after eating wheat products or consuming beer. I remembered running into this girl who waved at me and said hello and I had no idea who the fuck she was, it turns out she's an old coworker who lost an incredible amount of weight just from cutting those things out of her diet. It was amazing that she got those results and has kept all the weight off, she looks great. I don't think that cutting out wheat/gluten will benefit everyone because not everyone seems to exhibit the same amount of sensitivity towards those things. The alternative products are not bad (ie rice pasta is actually quite tasty) but they are a lot more expensive and are only readily avalaible at specialty markets (ie capers) good luck! The odd thing is that I'm weird and have rice pasta and stuff all the time... So I'm basically there... Plus living it Kits everyone is trying to be a specialty market, the Shoppers Drug Mart by my house has rice pasta.
I'm just entering a really busy time in my life and I'm worried about the convenience that I'll lose by following two very strict diets together. I guess there is not better time to make such changes than a New Year! |

Beer is made with barley so it has gluten in it. :P I've got a list of most foods for anemia so I'm good with that, thanks! |

This is me in a nutshell as well Myra. I had Mono when it seemed everyone had it and I had no clue because I always felt those symptoms. |

beer sucks anyways. i'm anemic because it's very hard to get minerals to normal levels once you've been defincient of them because your body stores SO much...I know what foods to eat and I'm actually retuning to quite normal levels and I get sufficient amts of protien in my diet (get blood testing and my dr says I am doing a great job.) |

hehe. Well I like beer, but only sometimes. Martinis are where it's at! :)
I guess I've been pretty lucky on the mineral/protein front, and that my brush with anemia was somewhat short-lived. But since I eat only chicken (occassionaly turkey) I try to make sure I eat alot of foods chockful of protein and iron, and I take omega 3 vitamins. I'm gonna make it a point to eat even healthier this year. |

i just started seeing a naturapath after 3 months of illness (rolling into month 5 now) and its helped me tremendously. i have digestion problems, and was told by everyone and there fricken dog to get off wheat and other gluton products. only problem was that oatmeal and toast was the only meal i could eat and be able to stand up afterwards.
lately i've been fainting and am totally tired but its from the lack of nutrition. its so bloody hard - like myra said - to replenish the minerals and proteins you lost, especailly if your body has a hard time digesting it. my advice from personal experience - see a naturapath. i've always had these red bumps on my arms and have been told to just exfoliate and they'll go away and they never ever have. he took one look and said your just lacking in vitamen a. gave me some small doses and presto! they're gone. naturapaths are the shit. they listen to you, which i felt was one of the problems i was so sick - the doctors i was seeing were not listening to me. maybe they could set up a rpogressive diet with you on slowly taking out gluton - one that suits your lifestyle? |
