How do bit torrents work?
So yeah, I downloaded the tracker from bittorrent.. it let me download one thing, and that's it. So, what do I do now? I've made a few torrents I guess (they're only like 15k a piece) I guess I'm supposed to host them on my server? So, when someone downloads the torrent my share rating improves? How am I supposed to know if any is downloading anything?
Ugh, very confusing, and no 'bit torrents for dummies' book :D So, can anyone help a brotha out? Break it down for me.. |

The best way for you to personally download Bit Torrents is to get ahold of a copy of BitLord. It's got a nice GUI, similar to LimeWire, I believe. As for hosting them, I believe the BitLord website tells you everything you need to know about em. Hope this helps.

oh, easy.. I used this client when I first started using Torrents as opposed to standard filesharing software (napster, Kazaa, BearShare, LimeWire, etc).. first off, I recommend that you drag the files that aren't transfering up to where the one that is transfering is (if that makes sense). That way they all download at once and you don't lose your hosts. You should also be able to change your settings to allow multiple downloads simultaneously.
Now, when you download torrents, they store on your computer and you begin to 'seed' them (I believe that's the term). All this means is others can download them, making their transfers faster, and in return (in theory) your download speed increases as well. It's supposed to be a communal thing, almost communist in the sense that everyone benefits from everyone's effort. As far as I know, that's all there is to it. It's really a simple system, as easy as any other file sharing program, just faster due to less traffic and cutting out the middle man (the filesharing server). |

We are following the example led by other private bittorrent trackers and we have banned all BitComet clients. Perhaps having so many sites banning it will encourage their developers to do something about it.
The reason why: BitComet, like Azureus, allows the sharing of peers via a DHT system. Azureus implemented SecureTorrents into their client, which we coded into our tracker. BitComet followed and implemented a similar private flag. Unfortunately, the BitComet authors decided not to code what they said ("BitComet will not add DHT Network as Backup Tracker even all the trackers can not be connected later, and will also disable Peer Exchange between peers") and instead ignore this flag after a period of time. If the BitComet developers create a new version which behaves as it should, we will happily change our stance on this. But at the moment, BitComet is not welcome here. If you want a replacement client, we recommend µTorrent and Azureus. http://oink.me.uk/ http://www.seedler.org/en/ http://bitme.org http://themixingbowl.org http://www.demonoid.com/torrents/ http://www.1bt.ru http://www.audiofarm.cc http://www.torrentskickass.com/ An no I won't give out invites. http://torrentit.com Last edited by narc; Jan 07, 06 at 04:39 PM. |
