A lot of people have turned this into a "Who deserves the Calder" thread, which is fine.. as I said initially, you can make a case for Ovechkin.. in fact, I'll go one better and say he's the clear leader right now.

The only problem with yelling at me with that kind of argument is that that's not what I stuck my nose in to argue in the first place. My point is this:

People are getting so caught up in the Ovechkin hype (which, interestingly, is a semi-backlash to the Crosby hype), that they're saying completely disrespectful things about a kid who is going to be one of the legends of our game.

Forget about Alex Ovechkin for a minute. Pretend he doesn't exist. Take him out of the league for the moment. Say he joins next year, or five years down the road. Would statements such as "Crosby who?" make any sense at all?.. about an eighteen year old who has more points than Markus Naslund? Would anyone be saying he "hasn't been able to rack up points"? (a statement that still baffles me, Anjew)

What we've got on our hands this year (and rest assured, I'm pissed that I'm not seeing most of it) are two phenoms. Not one, but two. One is shining brighter than the other right now, but we're talking about and 11 compared to a 9. Statements like "Crosby has nothing on Ovechkin" drive me up the wall. 5 points seperate them in the standings. They have virtually identical shooting percentages (might I add, the flip side of "he's got no-one of any talent to play with" is of course "he's got no-one he should pass to")... And Anjew, as long as we're playing the comparison game, saying the following:

Quote:
In 2 years Crosby may reach that potential you speak of, but in 2 years who knows where Ovechkin's level will go.
Doesn't exactly level the playing field. How about comparing Crosby in 2 years to what Ovechkin is NOW. IE when they're both 20. Does that make a little more sense?

Regardless, I don't see why, in terms of their overall worth, we need to slag one in order to tout the other... some people need to take a step back and check their perspective.

I believe Crosby is overhyped. A good player but nowhere near the "savior" stature he is getting. If Ovechkin wasn't in the league, I would say Crosby needs to learn to stay out of the box. Kovalchuk made Crosby look like a tool. Best moment this year.

This is a really crazy year for rookies and very unfortunate for some. There are atleast a hand full of player that could easily win rookie of the year on any given year except for this year that is. Heres a a list of some that i personally think are some sick rookies

ALEXANDER OVECHKIN
SIDNEY CROSBY
MAREK SVATOS
DION PHANEUF
ANDREJ MESZAROS

There are a couple more but these 5 are on the top of my list. All excellent players but it is pretty obvious that unless something happens to either Crosby or Ovechkin like an injury or something that one of them will win.

Ovechkin I think is definately the more skilled. Natural scorer and just ubelievable. Crosby on the other hand has a more well rounded game with passing as well. Either way I can care less who wins. All i know is heres atleast 5 players who will be some great players for years to come.

OK. Your comment about an eighteen year old rookie who's on pace for 90+ points would be that he needs to stay out of the box. Alrighty.

man... look at you grapes... you need to take a step back and calm down.

How's this: I think Teemu Selanne is better then Crosby. There. are you going to kill yourself now?
Calm down.
I shudder at the thought of you being a hockey dad in the future.

^ teemu salanne in his rookie year set the record for most goals, and would have had most points except for the amount of talent that year was rediculous

ANDREJ MESZAROS

^ very glad to see someone point that out

The point Anjew is trying to say is for all the Hype and media coverage Crosby has gotten compared to Ovenchkin he isn't doing nearly enough to be the so called "Next One" Lindros had a way better breakthrough season.

Point is Crosby should be doing more for his team, than just racking up some points.

I just don't think he is the next one and I definetly think Ovenchkin has the more dynamic package.

Crosby has been playing on great teams up until this year in the NHL. Rimouski *great team*, Canada World Junior Team *Star Studded Team*.

^ the kids is solid. Might not have as many points as Ovenchkin and Crosby but man his plus minus kills both Ovenchkin and Crosby's given he is playing on the Ottawa Senators... but a plus +30 is pretty darn solid.

Hey why is he one of the only ones? I agree with everything you said.

Anjew your post is weird, like you imagined a bunch of swear words I didn't type or something.

^ he is talking about Andrej Mezszaros and his plus +31

not ovenchkin or crosby.

He is a pretty solid rookie not named Crosby or Ovenchkin or Svatos for that matter.

Peter Prucha could be thrown in there too. but he has kinda of slowed down too, not enough of a play maker i guess.

Goal wise he is not too shabby though
