Electronic music in the media (tv, radio, movies)
Okay so, who can name me a tv commerical, movie, radio ad etc with some kind of electronic music..
1. The newest Boston Pizza ads use old school drum n bass riffs.. 2. The 'all mighty' satisfaction by Benni Benassi on that Burger King commercial Any others? Anyone want to debate the relation to the scene? Postive? Negative? |

I think it was Midnight Club 3 or one of the gotham racing games that had some trip dnb in it. And unfortunately, how can we forget those Buck-A-Day Dell ads? Oh, and all those sleezey adult dating paid programs.
Edit: for the most part, I think it has a negative affect on the scene. The mainstream culture looks on electronica as cheezy, repetitive music and for the most part, don't even realize there's more to electronica than bad Techno and House music. I hated electronica until I heard some decent hard house, breaks, and of course Drum N Bass Last edited by tiedye; Jan 21, 06 at 03:03 AM. |

Sorry bud, f'ed up the thread title :D
But yeah I agree, the majority of people who don't really know electronic music think of everything as 'techno' and media does not help that at all. I don't know how that would change though, maybe more 'good' electonic music in mainstream media would help. I know it's cheesy, but that benni benassi commercial DID help the scene by promoting a generally pretty major underground track to mainstream media.. At least there'll be a few more google searches trying to find out the artist/trackname, ya know? |

its crazy, but hardy anybody notices it. people say they hate electronica music but they have never really noticed that it is a part of their daily life sometimes. thats why when people actually hear electronica, they feel like they already are used to it.

this questions has come up many times, since i became a slave to the break, many moons ago. and i think it becomes somewhat more valid with the passing of time, as the more music enteres the field of advertising, marketing, soundtracks, commercials and various other media formats. Like anything street level, undeground, edgy, if it is styling and underground, someone is going to put a subversive, marketing spin on it, and many will eat it up, and a few will denounce it. Does it hurt our "scene" our "culture" well im not too sure, there are few different stances:
-it helps struggling artists, people need to put food on the table or -it helps get more obscure musical styles out there or -more quality music gets out in the general populace or -artists make a significant switch to making more commercially viable music for the intent of selling to such commercial outlets, and slowly the level of pioneering and experimental spirit dwindles realistically at the end of the day, there will always be a form of commercialized, mainstream, user friendly music, because lets face it, there are citizens of the world who enjoy such music, and just like we have an avenue to listen to our quality undergound beats, they mindless sheep should be allowed to listen to their watered down crap too. (although please note, there has been some quality beats used in the mainstream media - i too, agree with hearing some banging beats occasionally on the discovery channel and almost make a game of trying to identify them) but i watch very little tv, so its still has appeal as a novelty. edit: for fable
^give it a break. I haven't had TV for about 3 years now, but i remember Dirty Vegas - Days go by... for a mitsubishi commercial. later on an interview, I learned that that's how they got famous! they were just some locals before that. |
