I CANNOT believe that the man who put out Bringing Out the Dead (my fave movie), Mean Streets, Goodfellas, fuck. . . so many good movies. . . doesn't get one Oscar, yet a shitty song deserves the recognition? I mean, it's not like someone just says "oh, it's just best original soundtrack" . no it's "Oscar Award Winning". Shiiiiite. This is why I hate award shows.

Forrest Gump was a drawn out love story with catchy memes and one-line quips from a retarded-yet-insightful character.

Everything that's useful of Forrest Gump's character is funnier and more poignant in Chris from Family Guy.

But Forrest Gump was Oscar fodder from day one.

Pulp Fiction took the entire Pulp style of writing and translated it into a movie, presented in a fragmented form and challenging the way movies were made. Ever since then it's been an oft imitated style. Tarantino has influenced movies and moviemaking more than Zemeckis should ever hope to. Gump was predictable and safe, and that's why it won the oscar.

I don't think that the Oscars are rigged, I just don't think anybody in AMPAS has any good taste in movies.

well obviously its not based on the nominee's history. Its based on the specific movie thats nominated. I heard that you have to watch the movie to actually appreciate the song.

The oscars are like the grammies. Yeah, everybody involved is a pro and whatnot, but they never vote for the edgier more cutting-edge stuff. It's always the safe ones. How many people predicted that Philip Seymore Hoffman was gonna win the acting nod? And like I didn't totally call Crash ten seconds beforehand. And that's just judging the movie from the Oscar Clips they showed of it.

If you want to put your family member as a typical member of AMPAS, then I'm blaming them for Titanic winning 11 Oscars. You sure you want to put that kind of responsibility on them?

I'm not saying that the Oscars are going to change or that they should change. Honestly, if movies like Requiem For A Dream won best picture the Oscars wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are.

But it's self-perpetuating. You said so yourself your family member has been nominated for two themselves. Which means that people who make dry, boring and safe movies are voting for dry, boring and safe movies.

(Again, nothing against your family member as I really have no clue who they are or what movies they've worked on or whatever... just stating my observations)

Dude the movies you listed (including Pulp Fiction) are movies I would consider "cool"...not that they're bad....but they dont consist of enough good cinematic elements to put them in oscar contention (except maybe in some aspects).

some undeniably good movies (meaning good acting, cinemtography, direction, script etc.) are:

and most of these movies didn't get oscar attention for no reason
