"Women are inferior..."
...is what Harvey C Mansfield, Harvard Professor seems to suggest in his newly published and controversial book "Manliness".
This is one of the most interesting and somehow funny interviews that I've seen in a while. In an hour-long interview, Naomi Wolf, a feminist author interviews Mansfield, a masculinist author of "Manliness" and asks him to define what manliness means. In conversing with Wolf, Mansfield seems to contradict himself frequently and fail to defend his arguments. As the interview progresses you begin to wonder if it's all a joke... If you're interested, watch the interview here (it starts off a lil dry but gets more interesting as it progresses): http://www.booktv.org/ram/afterwords...tv031906_4.ram Some of the arguments that Mansfield makes in this interview: "Manly men look down on women.. but listen to women they love" "Women can not boast, stand up and fight and do what manly men do.. in a way it's not their fault, they are women after all" "Manly men may look down on other men who they regard as feminist or womanly" "Racial sterotypes are generally wrong, but sexual stereotypes are generally correct" "Manliness is the ability to be confident in the face of risk" "Feminist activists are MANLY" "Women with influence who assert themselves are the way they are because they possess MANLY qualities" "Manly men are stubborn and insistent and in no mood to make a bargain" "Manly men are bombastic, theatrical, dramatic" "Manly men are not that interested in women's affairs" "I think manly and sensitive are really quite opposite. You're looking at them with rose-colored glasses if you think they have both" "A man will chafe under a woman boss" "Women don't inspire the same sense of authority as a man boss, so they have to work at it a little to be authoritative" Naomi Wolfe: "So you have to have a PENIS to be authoritative?" Mansfield: "Well... Yes" Oh he also says that Clint Eastwood is Manly but Leonardo Di Caprio is not, and that Bush is more manly than Kerry. your thoughts? but i don't believe that just because someone is associated with a well-respected university, that their ideas necessarily need to be taken for granted either. |
