I will be making a documentary on vancouver's scenes
Yup, i've decided to actually do something with my life and well, i am passionate about electronic music.
So in the next weeks/months, I'll be running around to various clubs and showcasing vancouver's various scenes. Starting from the clubs featuring house, trance, technos and onto the underground and mainstream parties. I will be conducting interviews with promoters, dj's and turntablists.. Just so people that arent in the know.. are in the know. our scene has been trashed with the media featuring overdoses rather than what we all go to parties for.. The music. In hopes to submit it to a film festival and probably get eaten out by critics or have some good reviews. If you are a promoter and are willing to let me and a few camera guys come in and do some reports about who you are, what the music means to you and a bit of the business sense, please let me know and i'd be more than happy to conduct some interviews while the music is pumping. I want to start off with the vancouver scene, just for a test.. because in the next year i'm going to do a little tour of the world visiting places as Sensation, Love parade and maybe to ibiza. If i can get a really well done project here I can hopefully send it out to contacts at different places and get another documentary done. |

Hrm.....
You might wanna check out the soma cafe this coming friday at 9pm... Every first fridays of every month they hold an idm/experimental type event. Last one was absolutely amazing. Also on may 18th I believe there is going to be a "harsh noise" event that I believe at the alibi.... So if you looking for some underground you probably wanna just check them out first..... |

interesting idea. you should try to find every other documentary made about raves and watch it, just so you have a starting place to go from and don't say something or do something that has already been done. i don't know any names of documentaries, but i have seen snippets from many over the past few years...just so you know.
is this a solo project or do you have a group of people helping you out? documentaries are fucking hard work. Quote:
edit: also i <3 editing and post-pro...so if you need some help in that stage let me know. i got the ability to edit video on my powerbook with final cut pro and the space to store uncompressed video. |

WHAT IS against the grain, is providing information of fringe/grassroots/ underground communities in a non self serving manner, that doesnt put the artistic interpretation before the actaul content. Although any documentary piece has a strong subjective element, i find them of late suffering the same problems as conventional film. All the same, this sounds like a cool endevour. |

you're welcome to get footage at our party on the 12th, if you can supply us with a copy. Though i dont think jeremy or i would want to be in any interviews or for our names or production companys name to be used at all in the final cut. good stuff marty, best of luck |

I doubt i'll be able to shoot on the 12th.
My friends are in school and wont be able to wrap up until the end of may, early june. I'll be working on the outline, just going to wing the script.. kudos to all who want to be a part of it. Wood, you wont have to do full frontal... everyone loves you for your ass. |

well, find something to focus on - it's easy to be too general especially if you'll be collecting a year of footage before cutting it together. or at the very least get an outline going like divide it into sections of genres or something.... would be cool to do like 4 20-minute sections on the different genre scenes in this city.
