crazy shit.... good to hear your fine...
but smart move your getting the hell out of there cause you don't know how the aftershocks will be or weather another quake will happen.... Its not uncommon for another quake to happen within the week. Keep in mind before that tsunami in 04 there was alot of quake activity before the big one hit and shit went down.... That sucks man, but I'm kind of suprised you're leaving because of that.
I had a category 4 hurricane headed my way when I was in australia a few months back, as well as a few smaller ones...I never once considered leaving. The experience of travelling (and hey, even getting to maybe see a hurricane?) was faaaar more valuable to me than a bit of drama or discomfort. I mean if you have warning and you take precautions.... I did actually catch the edge of a category 3 cyclone by the way...pretty cool. Head for higher ground and bring your camera. :) Not trying to dis or anything man...just a different outlook than me I guess. |

^ naw trust me man . i was runnin around like an idiot for the first while .. finally calmed down after i found out it was called off. . then recalled Thialand 2004 -- how a series of Quakes lead to the big disaster.. and realized i may be stuck in the middle of a future ground zero.
After relaxing a bit .. i decided i couldnt stay any long .. went online and booked my airline tix .. checked my email -- 19 new messages from friends & family either Warning me about the quake or seeing if i was Alive thats why i booked the first flight out .. and unfortunately ..i have family living here. .. but the good thing is they are above on higher ground .. Either way .. I cant imagine how much of FIJI would be left if a massive Tsunami hit. . if anyones been here ,. they know its smack in the middle of the Pacific Ocean .... u can drive across the country in 2 hrs. Its ridiculously small. I know i may sound like a bitch . But times like this u actually realize what the world is all about .. Some parts of the world have major risks to live in. In the end u actually realize how good you have it living in Canada. |

Back in 94 when there was the big earthquake off the coast of Japan, they issued tsunami warnings for hawaii, where i was living at the time. Never seen downtown honolulu and waikiki VACANT with sirens going, and everyone watching the emergency broadcast system on TV.
Granted we were on about the 20th floor, 6 blocks in from the beach...and no tsunami ever hit, but still, it's something you deal with. I personally wouldn't leave, I don't understand why you're leaving....Danger can strike anywhere anytime, you're just as safe there as you are at home... |

I don't think you should necessarily leave, that's like saying there's a shooting in the middle east and anyone could be targeted. It happens, there are dangers everywhere in the world. Granted, Canada might be a tad safer, but think about it, you'rein Fiji, I am sure it's beautiful there. I wouldn't hop on a plain quite that soon. If they stopped issuing the warning, that means that for the mean time, things are safe and I am sure they are monitoring for aftershocks on the earthquake.
Anyways, safe return home |

It's hard to say what I would do... however during most trips away coming home was always my LAST resort. I love to travel and experince others way of life... even if there was a disaster alert I wouldnt want to leave early. Personaly I would do the best I could to stay with those I know and seek safety. If disater did happen I feel its my duty to stay and help. Its kind of like being a guest at dinner and then fleating if the stove catches on fire.
The only thing that really scares me would be war or political riots. |
