U-pass question...
I paid the $100 deposit fee the summer semester @ SFU because my transfer to UBC wasn't confirmed until mid-april, and I was unsure of whether I'd be at SFU or UBC in June. SFU ended up sending me a U-PASS for the summer semester that's valid until August assuming I'd be a student there.
But now, I got an e-mail from SFU basically saying, "we noticed that you didn't enroll in classes for summer semester so we dropped the U-PASS charges from your account and now we want you to come up to SFU and drop off your u-pass to the maggie benson centre" and I'm thinking "MAKE ME!". They didn't specify whether there would be consequences for not having returned my u-pass, they just "requested" that I return it as it is the property of translink (well they never ask for the old u-passes back!?). Now I'm thinking, what would be the consequences of not returning it, if any? What if I returned their property after the u-pass expired? What if I "lost" it? What if I "never received it". What actions are they entitled to take against me, and would they even bother to "Take action" if I didn't return it? If I could get away with it, I'd really rather not pay for bus passes this summer because I will be commuting for many hours across zones. Does anyone know of anyone that was in this situation and do you know what they did? What do you think? -Yoko |

i know a friend that was in that same circumstance last summer and she kept her u-pass and nothing happened. but i'm not sure if they dropped the upass charges from her or not.
might as well keep it until the last second that you can. |

Judging by what they wrote in the letter (basically REQUESTING me to bring back the U-pass without listing any consequences) i get the impression that they don't have much power to do anything about it. if they had any authority to do anything I'm sure they would have written something a little firmer in their letter. The worst they can do is charge me for what I owe... I'd rather pay a $90-ish fine than pay $400 worth of bus passes for the next few months. I'll see what happens :P |

I am at sfu and scammed the system to get the UPASS and they say that, but it will work throughout the whole semester and you get your money back. They don't make you come down and to return it, they just ask you to.
Do what you want with it, I am using mine all summer! |

i cannot imagine that the really would give a crap, honestly.
i use to live on hastings and duthie, and some of the most direct routes towards SFU travel along that intersection. most of the people heading eastbound had u passes and it was always packed. so with such a large number of students using this service, i cannot logically see them following every students usage of this service. i’m sure there is even may be student who are not in university at all using this service under the same circumstances that were given to you. |

My advice: keep it. I know other people who have done the same thing. Who knows, they may be getting wise, but try your luck. I mean shit, YOU'VE DONE NOTHING WRONG. If they want it, they can come and get it! |
