New Forum listing. Seeking input.
This was brought about by this post: http://fnk.ca/board/help-bugs/94409-forums.html#post1582919
I'm new here too and i find these to be some of the most confuzing forums i've ever been too. None of the forums have proper names or descriptions. A lot of the forums are hidden "sub forums" and don't seem to relate to the "parent forum". aka: da sweet stuff -> gaming forum. Here's the current layout structure: http://www.fnk.ca/board/archive/index.php/ Here's what i'm thinking. These need to be ordered properly, named, and described. In my opinion it's more important for the forum to have a descriptive name than a "cool/funky" one. This is also important for search engine optimizing. Right now FNK doesn't get any relavent hits on google about music because of the poorly described forum names. The names should be what you would want someone to search for and find that particular forum.

I like it!
Though the general catagory order I think would work better as such; Chat Category Music Category Event Category DJ Category Buy and Sell Category Archive Category Help Category My two cents! How are you planning on listing sub cats within the main ones? Will there be a list on the main menu telling you the sub cats within each one? |

The problem with cool funky names is that the titles are used in the <title> and that's important for SEO.
I like how revscene does it: VLS General Chat Loungin' at Loft 125 Current events, general discussion, random thoughts, topics that don't fit anywhere else on VLS.. OR Health & Fitness Get out and Play. Discussion of outdoor sports, events, fitness tips, diet and nutrition.. Descriptive Boaring Name Funky/Cool name Description. Something like that could be done for FNK and that way people know what the forum is about by just reading the title. Right now the titles are not descriptive enough and people (like me) don't know which is the proper forum to post in. |

The reason i put Music Category first though is because...this is a music forum. I know it's not the most popular category, but that's why this forum exists, for that reason, I think it should be first. Otherwise, i prefer your ordering.

somethings are wrong.. people are right.. don't sterilize
the old system was good like: The Punching Bag Bitch, whine, cry you're way into oblivion.. As for you're suggestions up there.. you don't want to split things up too much otherwise there will hardly be any posts in each category, browsers will be too seperated from eachother, and posts would hardly get any browse time as it would be a BITCH to check a shit load. stuff like hip-hop up there should only have the Music Discussion and Let's Hear Your Shit.. I personally think the listing revamp is a really bad idea.. too many damn forums for every single subject.. and besides you'd be missing alot.. what about "ROCK MUSIC".. people also like around vancouver and here.. then the sub categories > metal > emo > post-garage cheese > baloon-core.. then there'd be like one post per forum: don't u just LUV this band they gotz new cd in JUNE! gosh I used to have a forum and a buddy that was helping actually changed it so it was like this.. (pretty much exactly the same really) and it turned out horribly Last edited by scue; May 16, 06 at 03:01 PM. |

i think that splitting the music up into catagories would help, but maybe leave the rest as it is? i mean, it works well, and if you get too many sub catagories then as scue said, people will have a bitch of a time posting in the right areas.
although i like this Archive Category

I actually tend to agree scue. But I like the new outline.
I could go either way. Stay or revamp! I havent been on FnK long enough to have a good judgment on how many posts there are to warrent that many new catagories or not. I would only add the Music catagory. Keener! Personally, I like the new layout idea, but I can see how it could overwhelm a forum and get confussing. Maybe post a poll seeing what everyone thinks or if everyone would like to try the layout for a month or something. If I had to choose though, Id probably just add a few of the new cats onto this layout as is and see how it goes. |

Suggestion area Bugs & Support The Archive Shitty Threads This just further proves my point that the forums, as they stand now, are not easy to navigate. Quote:
I agree. I didn't add all that much except for the Electronic Music subforums. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. What i don't want is people battling between genres and segregating up people just because they have to post their trance thread in the trance forum. People who are into breaks would probably never take a look at the trance sub forum. That's a bad idea. As for the other categories/sections. I haven't really added too many. The new ones are: - The Entire HipHop category I would like to expand FNK into the underground HIPHOP comunity in vancouver. Right now they don't really have a place on the internet to hang out. 90% of the hiphop club nights are top 40 HIPPOP playing BEPeas. ANd the local emcee talent in vancouver is lacking. I can count the number of good emcee from Vancouver on one hand and still have enough fingers to give some girl a "shocker". I'm going to merge "HIPPOP" and "the underground" into 1 forum. - Under Chat Category I added: Fashion, Employment, Education - Fashion forum is for some stuff myles and I have planned for the future. - Employment forum is a good idea for people who are looking for work, or have internal job postings they want people to know about. This will get these threads out of the lounge. People looking for work will check this forum on the regular. because after all, it's not what you know, but who you know. - Education forum will consist mainly about people bitching about thier classes. Not really needed, but just removes those "man school sucks" threads from the main discussion. - Under Buy&Sell/Classifieds I split into sections: Transportation,Tickets, CDs & DVDs & Records, Music, Equipment, Clothes, Everything else I think splitting up the buy and sell is a good idea. If you're looking to sell or buy anything, now you'll know where to look/post. DJ Category I added: Emcee profiles Giving emcee's their own section to keep them out of the DJs. Like i said before. All the other forums already exist in the current FNK, they're just hidden in sub-forums. I'm trying to get rid of sub-forums because they're confuzing. Let me post the new listing:

Also These forum names are not final. They will just be what is in the forums. They will all need to have proper names, so let's not debate that until we've worked out the forum structure. |

I like the juice this thread is squeezing but I still want some more users to get involved. They will be the ones complaining later :p
Personally I would like to ripp up all subforums and put them on the one main board. As for the Music/Events subs, I would leave them for the time being as people fear extensive change. The problem with bringing out all the small subforums is that massive mainpage. I hate to scroll endlessly to the bottom. One idea (the better) is just to make 2 columns of forum names side by side. Here are some interesting forum examples, bare in mind these are massive forums. http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/ - mods highlight good threads and they become the main page. I love it but my doubts in FNK being as open to this as me. http://my.opera.com/community/forums/ - imagine this but with 2 columns of forums per section. shit, let me get a better example. Well my forum links are somewhat thin today, I will just mock up an example of what I mean using the site when I grab a minute. I think the other admins should have a swing with their thoughts. |

the hip-hop shit still bugs me because that's all i've been looking at. Just put all of the loc/homemade stuff in one thread.. and put discussion in another.. wether it be top40 or underground.. you can't put different race/sex/colour people in different schools just because they might disagree with eachother or conflict.
