Got Trades? (part 2)

Well it's been 6 months to a year since my last post on this, so I just thought I'd check back in. How's everyone been doing? Anyone get started at a trade in the mean time? So lets hear it, the good the bad and the ugly.

For me I've been doing well. I'm making close to twice an hour what i was a year ago and learning quickly. The road has not been without its pitfalls though. Lets see... I almost got in fight the other day with possibly the scariest person I've ever seen on a sight. He said something that really crossed the line (!!!) and I told him off. Lucky for me he just decided to start throwing things and smash out a wall that I had just built. My truck got dented by some idiot in the parking lot a while back and of course no one mentioned anything. What else... I've broken 2 of my lasers, now I have none, that cost $200 and $400 respectively.

All in all I still like it. Any other drywall/steel stud guys on the board?

It's light work for the most part and really good money. Also that is a trade I would consider in the long run because there is always maintenance contracts as a fall back.

I finished my entry level and 1st year of school for auto mechanics (service tech) back at end of January. Learned a lot. Totally glad I did it. It may or may not be something I want to do the rest of my life, but the money is good and it's something to fall back on, if nothing else.

Sorta gotta get my ass in gear and find a job in my trade though, i'm waiting tables now of all things.

I was going to college for Commercial Diving. But problems with that there.

A good family friend of my moms back in kelowna owns a really sucessfull buisness. My mom talked to him and he apparently would love to have me work there. Which would be awsome! He does really well so I think Id be ok!

Been doing Ramp Services for almost 3 1/2 Years now.

Kinda low on the Totem Pole of Trades, but I'm good at it. Moving up to Crew Chief with my Company in the next couple months most likely.

But other than that, my Application to the Military is progressing so my new Trade is looking to be an Infantry Officer.

More men and women should consider going into trades. There's so much job security in trades and the money that can be made is pretty sweet. There's also more of an opportunity to start your own business and never have to worry about working for someone else.

I think a lot of ppl look down on people who work in trades, but in Europe it's a lot more common for someone to go into a vocational program than it is for them to go to university.

There's no shame in working with your hands at all; especially not when you're in your twenties and making more money than any of your university educated friends could ever dream of.

I hope our society is far beyond considering it shameful to work with your hands! I'm suprised you even felt a need to say that.

My best friend works for himself as a glazier, and charges over $40 an hour. He's got so much going on he's actually having to turn down jobs cus he's too busy. I could only dream of that kind of money.

I think that a lot of people believe that the only way to become successful is by going to university and look down on ppl who haven't necessarily chosen to go that route. Parents encourage their children to go to university so they can earn a decent living. Even high schools don't really focus on trades as possible career options anymore. More and more "shop" classes are being phased out and they can't even find teachers to teach them.

depends on your skills before hand, if you have some knowledge of the trade you may make a bit more, if you know shit all then your gonna be paid shit all. Your wages depend on what you know and how long you have been working. Just like any other job.

Some rough prices for a journeyman tradesworker can be anywhere from 25-60/hr (depending on your trade/union/knowledge)

My buddy is a "B" pressure welder. HE bought a $50,000 truck , put a welder , a torch and some tools in the back , and drove it up to the oilsands. The pipline company supplys him with materials (gas, rods, etc.) fuel for his welder and truck , a laborer to clean the welds , a hotel room and food. HE CLEARS $1000 a day. HE only works for 3/4 of the year. Do the math. It isn't fun way to live....but most only do it for a few year to get a good chunk of money together.

No journeyman should make less than $30 an hour, unless they are should i say a little slow. Starting wages are often low but they go up quickly. As with a lot of things though if you have some decent business sense you can make way better money working for yourself.

My dad is a taper and mostly does piece work, sometimes by the hour. He made over a 100k this year. I worked for him pretty much all summer my whole life and then a year after high school, I'm glad I quit to go back to school :)
