If you had a DJ/producer speaking at your school...

Is there anything you'd want to know about that isn't covered in this outline?
I have to present and demo to a bunch of grade 10 to 12 students in about three hours and I'm very excited, but I want to make sure that it looks okay and that I cover it all!

Thanks for your feedback!!

Outline

BACKGROUND
• My history as a musician, MC, DJ, music producer/engineer

EXPLANATION
• What is a DJ? Difference: mainstream & underground
• What is an MC? Difference: mainstream & underground
• What is a music producer/engineer?

EDUCATION
• How I learned to DJ
• DJing and production school
• Private lessons and internship/apprenticing

TECHNOLOGY
• Vinyl – turntables (demo)
• CDs and CDJs (demo)
• Evolution of Final Scratch, Serato Scratch (explain)
• Computer music production & recording; an evolution (explain)

MARKETING
• Creating your own unique identity
• Putting together a press kit (mix CDs, press releases, biz cards)
• Online: website, mix downloads, linking sites, Myspace
• Radio: college radio, or podcasting!
• Agent or self-represent? Pros and cons

GET WORKING
• The importance of being multifaceted – explore every talent
• DJ/MC at clubs, festivals, on television, art shows, salons
• Getting a residency; pros and cons
• Local support or international focus?
• Producing/engineering other people’s music
• Getting an artist deal (owning your own masters! No A.I.!)
• Licensing original music for TV, film, video games
• Scoring films (work with students to start)
• Collaborating with other producers (networking)
• Tax writeoff bonuses

THE PITFALLS
• Being a woman in the industry, common stereotypes/views
• Industry in general – drugs, image-focused, pressure to look & act a certain way
• Sex or Respect – Playboy DJs to turntablist chicas
• Being in the spotlight – gossip, judgement – “no publicity is bad publicity”
• Unstable income – making ends meet

THE REWARDS
• Rocking a crowd, changing the mood of an entire room
• Making your own music from start to finish
• Helping other people realize their vision
• Travelling, meeting new people
• Can make quite a lot of money when you make it

I just finished taking a course from a very accomplished public speaker, so here is what I have to suggest in terms of structure:

I think the most important part of a presentation is the introduction. The whole point of the intro is to (A) establish your ethos with the audience, i.e. tell them why they should even be listening to you in the first place, and (B) outline what you're going to talk about. So in your intro, go ahead and tell them about your background and qualifications like you're already intending to. They need to know that they're listening to someone who knows what she's talking about. And then outline what you're going to talk about, i.e. give your audience a structure to follow. You've done that already... you just have to actually tell them that you're going to be talking about:

"So in my presentation, I'm going to talk about 'explanation, education, technology, marketing, get working, the pitfalls, and the rewards.'" (of course, u should re-title each section)

My last suggestion is to create a conclusion portion - just basically summarize the main points of your presentation. It's good for people who haven't been listening throughout the whole presentation, but it's kind of like acknowledging, "Hey, if you haven't been listening the whole time, then here's the Cole's notes version of my presentation"

In terms of content, your presentation looks great.

narc will become famous soon enough
Whats the difference between what they play on the z95 and what you hear at raves/nightclubs.

Whats the difference between a Much Music Highschool Video Dance deejay who makes $50 for the night and a big headliner that gets $4,000/night.

All you do is just play records.

Nice work on this Illy.

I totally agree with the point above, but it appears you've established good history on yourself, your qualitifications and ultimately why you were asked to come and speak to these kids.

You may briefly want to touch on the history of DJ'ing, MC'ing, Breakdancing, etc. -- Kids love visuals so bring in some clips from Scratch or even laptop-based stills of old skool DJ setups, etc. From there I would then lead into defining what a DJ/MC/Producer/Engineer is, etc.

The more visuals you have the better -- good on ya for doing a live demo - the kids will LOVE that.

Good luck with things!

I believe that will be covered in my explanation of Mainstream vs. Underground.

And no, actually, I'm speaking of how to stand out in the industry, which to me involves more than just "playing records". I make my own music, do my own vocals and MCing, and use synthesizers and effects processors. Others might go for turntablism.... but you gotta do something different!!

bring up the difference between the hiphop dj/turntablist and the electronic mixer.

A lot of the uninformed think DJs are all either a) top40/radio djs that just play songs or b) scratchers like q-bert

a lot of people don't understand mixing or beatmatching and such

this is a wonderful thing your doing. big props
looks like you pretty much covered the bases.

But If i can offer one suggestion,

Whenever i saw school presentations by speakers, what i always noticed is that the kids always pay very close attention to when the speaker talks about their own youth.

Talk about the kind of stuff you were goin through at their age, so these kids can relate with you and see how people just like them can accomplish great things by taking the proper steps.

and try to make jokes and make fun of yourself, that really breaks the ice between public speakers and the audience.
