Jason Laidlaw, 28, of 6 Crawfors Common, was initially being pulled over at 2 a.m. for driving 40 mph in a 30 mph zone on Hampstead Road by Sandown officer Jason Morrow, according to police reports.
But Laidlaw drove away in a green Chevrolet pickup truck, police said. Morrow's affidavit said Laidlaw then led Morrow on a 11-minute, seven-mile chase through the town of Sandown that hit speeds up to 70 mph, twice the speed limit. Hampstead, Fremont and state police assisted the Sandown police during the pursuit, and Laidlaw struck a Fremont police car at the intersection of Brian Street and Route 121A, Main Street. The cruiser had damage to the left rear door and fender. Police said the pursuit continued until Laidlaw pulled into a private driveway on Allen Street where he fled from the vehicle and ran into the woods. Laidlaw was found 40 minutes later on Main Street as a passenger in a car driven by his brother. In the affidavit, Morrow said Laidlaw was covered from head to toe in snow and ice. "His shoes were untied and obviously on the wrong feet," he said. When I spoke to Laidlaw, his speech was slurred, eyes glossy red and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was coming from him." Morrow said Laidlaw was unable to tell him where he was coming from or why his clothes were covered in snow. "As I spoke to him he appeared confused and was mumbling his words and not saying anything that appeared to have anything to do with what we were discussing," Morrow said. Laidlaw was arrested and charged with disobeying an officer, aggravated driving while intoxicated, reckless operation, reckless conduct and resisting arrest. Morrow said the combination of intoxication and fleeing from the scene make it an aggravated driving while intoxicated charge. State Police Troop A is investigating the case. Prosecutor Kevin Coyle said Laidlaw only has minor motor vehicle records with six speeding tickets but no criminal record. Laidlaw was released yesterday on $2,000 cash bail. His trial is March 18 at Derry District Court. Bail conditions include refraining from excess use of alcohol and narcotics. |
