There were a couple of things that stuck out for me in your prose. One being poverty in India. I believe that western media actaully downplays the poverty but intensifies the wanton violence, or doesnt connect violence with desperate poverty, so the overall picture is very skewed depending on the respective nations interests at the time. My parents have a strong, strong, strong affinity for India. Their time spent their while travelling significantly changed their lives, and I believe that anyone who travels to south asia goes through some sort of intense personal growth. I think in these times of horrific poverty, corruption, and war, its becomes even more important to stake out and travel and immerse oneself in foreign populations, and realize that in most cases, dependant on ones own class positions and experience, people may not be so different. I dont want to sound heavy (its hard not to) but in some fashion you have somewhat of a responsibility to search high and low in your travels. Whether you are in the "tourist detinations" or "off the beaten track" (both are very subjective) dont just be a sightseer, but be a participant. I think its also a good thing(in a non-martha way) to record and share your experiences. I have no doubt you will have no problem with this considering the detail and effort you put in your blog thus far. SO MANY PEOPLE do not understand South Asia. I have even met travellers that have spent YEARS there, and come back with nothing but stories about parties on beaches, cheap hookers, and bad ass meth. So headz out here dont always realize the true significance of the environment and lives that millions and millions of people live. Lastly you are visiting places that are some of the most spiritualy important places to those of eastern philosophies and religion, and easy as it is to find all that shit meaningless in our times of capitalist plunder and expansion and violence as a product, absorb as much as you can. Because such areas offer so much more than the typical Dalai Lama, commodified bullshit! Lastly, and probably most importantly is give back to the people you meet in whatever sense of the word you deem is appropriate at the time. We "westerners" make it a habit of always making it out about ourselves, and taking, taking and more taking. Have an amazing trip mate. I dont know you personally, but your blog got ME excited! Your travelling in times of great upheavel and change. These are tumultous times, so stay alert, and understand that desperate situations produce desperate acts. Stay safe when you need to, and cut loose when you can. Gluck! pc.ez ps:im really am jeolous! |
