I've bin looking forward to watching this, my great grandfather went to France in 1914, fought at the Somme and all the other battles the Canadian corps were involved in so i take special interest in specials like this.
On Monday there were also some interesting show's on about Vimy, and Passeanedale. Right now i'm watching a special about Verdun a battle that lasted 10 months and somebody died every minute for the whole 10 months plus 24 million artillary rounds were fired. Vedun was the battle that led to the battle of the Somme. Interesting stuff for sure. |

These documentaries about the great war are differant then all the ones i've seen about the second world war that have alot of stories of heroics and victory. These ones describe nothing but death and suffering.
I'll be out tomorrow night so i'll be taping it so i can watch it on saturday. |

I agree the tactics of the Brittish generals just marching all the troops across no man's land is insane. I can't imagine being one of those young men marching into a barrage of machine guns, artillary, and gas. Infact after a gas attack one of my great grandfathers was in his lungs were damaged so bad he suffered a pre mature death even though he made it through the war.
Over 300,000 men died at the Somme and most of their bones and remains are still in those fields. |
