^ I have a havanese. Technically not a "toy" breed, she falls in the "small" category, but she was really easy to housebreak. She's just over a year-old now and we leave a pee-pee mat out for her during the day "just in case" because we, too, can be gone for quite long periods of time. She rarely ever uses it, but it's good for her to have somewhere that she is allowed to go if she really, really can't hold it!
I would STRONGLY recommend looking into the Havanese breed if you are looking for a small dog. There are only a couple of breeders in BC so, consequently, I have met several of my dog's half-brothers and half-sisters, and they all have a very similar temperament and disposition. They're very sweet, loving dogs, and are quick learners! They're not yappy and while they are energetic, they're not crazy hyper like min pins can be. Mine weighs 18 lbs but they can weigh anywhere from 10-20 lbs. I find her to be the perfect size because she's still very small but big enough that you can play fight with her and not have to worry about hurting her! If you want any other info, just drop me a PM :) |

This is Super Star DJ Phillipe about a week after I got him, he weighed about 650 grams. Be prepared to have a dog who wants to sleep under the covers with you at night. I've also been warned that I should expect probably 1 broken leg in his life since he is so small. I've had him for almost 5 years now with no breaks :) He weighs just over 4 pounds now.

I also would recommend a Havanese. I have a little boy (Teddy) who's the love of my life. Do your research and you'll find that they are such a wonderful breed! He's so smart it's incredible. They are quirky, playfull little dogs who love people and other animals (some of the small breeds don't like strangers and other animals too much). He's very sweet and outgoing. I'm having no troubles with the house training of my little guy - the breeder actually started him on house training well before 8 weeks old. I know of one breeder in BC who will have puppies available soon.
