Implanted VeriChip RFID Tag Cloned

From Reuter's Blogs

Two presenters demonstrated the electronic equivalent of making a copy of an implanted RFID or radio frequency ID chip at the HOPE Number 6 conference in New York City.

“This is the first time someone has cloned an human-implanted RFID chip,” Newitz said. “Since I have been chipped Jonathan refers to me as an implanted pet.”

Newitz said she has an RFID chip implanted in her right arm manufactured by VeriChip Corp., a subsidiary of Applied Digital.

“Their Web site claims that it cannot be counterfeited — that is something that Jonathan and I have shown to be untrue.”

----------------

Companies need to stop passing off RFID tag technology as secure. Once they do that people will realize that they're just glorified UPCs (which could be cracked with a steady hand, a pencil and a scrap of paper, I might add) and stop trying to figure out new and exciting ways to cram them into everything.

They had a huge thing about rfchips in scientific american or popular science a couple months back. The article pretty much said that rf chips are implanted in almost everything, to give company's a clue to what is selling to certain demographics and how privacy activists have been shitting bricks for a while now.

Give me a sec to try and dig it up, it was a good read. It went on to say that you can actually short out or block rf signals using a cell phone.

people go ape about RFID tags being in everything, but c'mon, there's UPCs on everything, all that RFID tags have going for them is that they can work off proximity.
