Need new office computers.

I need two new computers for an office. One acts as a server for a network of 4 others. We usually purchase them from the company that supplies our software but they no longer do the hardware thing. I don't really no where to start. Is it better to buy a custom built computer from a private company? or an HP or something like that? Is the Dell brand any good?

thnx for your time.

If you don't need a warranty and have someone that can maintain the hardware then just go to Able Auctions and buy a server cheap and load an OS onto it.

I have a 3 HP Netservers sitting beside me and paid all of $300 each (Quad Xeon P3 CPU, 2Gb of RAM and 8 18Gb SCSI hard drives in a RAID array) for them and they could take care of your needs quite easily.

yeah if you spring for the dell gold support, you get next day on-site service. love it. it kind of depends on how mission critical your computers and servers are. if they are, go with a brand name for warranty/support.

Just stay away from HP /Compaq.

I would go with a Dell optiplex w/at least the bronze support.

Main advantage to buying from a major supplier is the fact you get support, although with today’s outsourcing trends most companies provide ass support anyway. Its the fast harware replacement that is most valuable. Dell would be ok for what you need.

Mateo - my office computer was bought through Able Auctions, and it is a mammoth of a machine, and I got my beautiful flat screen with it.

Holy hell that's a good deal!
I think like 3 months ago the company I worked for paid $1500 for essential the same set up (NetServe 4x1Ghz P3 Xeon, ours had 4x40GB SCI and 4GB of ECC RAM)

Listen to Deebs here. Go with the new Dell servers for sure and get the best support possible. Also ensure you include a back-up solution with you server. As you store more and more data/files along with financials, etc. on it, it will become mission critical where 99.9% uptime is a must.

Either that, or buy Winston's solution but sign him up for a 3 year onsite WINSTONED Warranty.
