I went up Friday afternoon.
My friend had only been to Mile 38, so, as we got closer, I told her I'd take her on a tour of 36 and 37. Blockaded. Large, dirt burms and logs across the access roads, with "WARNING: DANGER" signs posted, and a Grizzly Bear warning sign. Just as we got to the bridge, a Ranger came across and put his lights on. Nice enough guy. Asked us where we were heading. Told him Mile 38 to camp w/ friends. He tells us he needs to warn us about a Grizzly Bear sighted in the 36/37 areas. Said they just barred the access that morning. Seems some irresponsible people throwing "RAVE" parties up there weren't taking their garbage out. The Grizzly had been sighted numerous times around there, looking for food in the garbage. The bear had already been drugged and relocated. Twice. _THAT'S_ why the area has been "closed". The party I went up for nearly never happened. The Rangers were stopping all vehicles going up, and once they saw the gear, they threatened to confiscate it all. Smooth, fast talking on the parts of the organizers got the Rangers to let them go ahead... after three of them gave up their driver's licences. The Ranger said he'd be back Sunday afternoon, late, to check on the site. If there was any damage/garbage, they'd be taken to court. The Rangers, the First Nations Squamish, and the Czechs (the ones who left the signs saying they "found" the place...) are all Royally PISSED at the disregard partiers and Yobs have shown the area. So, now the crackdown. Was "Safa" the last party, there? Hope not. Glad I was there, if it was. Frosty (amazing times, up the river) |
