Apple has this evening entered the handheld space – unveiling games functionally to its latest iPod models and launching a download service via iTunes.
Apple chief executive Steve Jobs announced the news at a press conference in San Francisco earlier this evening. Two new iPods, plus a refreshed iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle were unveiled, all featuring increased battery life.
Most significantly for the interactive entertainment industry, Apple has also added games support to the iPod. Users can purchase games via the iTunes store for $4.99 each and play them using the device’s scroll wheel. Titles featured in the initial range include Pac Man, Tetris, Bejeweled, Mini Golf and Texas Hold ‘Em.
