Microsoft Releases Blueray Disc Add-On

So Microsoft decided to compete with Sony's Blueray technology by releasing an external Blueray disc player. Runs for around 170$. So adding the price up for the 360 and Blueray player. Your looking at the same price as the PS3. I think Sony deserves a smack for the delays. But I cannot wait for the console. Besides, they didn't want to pull a 360 release.

Actually, Microsoft is NOT releasing a Blu-Ray disc player. They are releasing a player add-on for their own high definition format, HD-DVD, which is NOT the same as Blu-Ray.

Sony = Blu-Ray

Microsoft = HD-DVD

There will be a format war in the near future between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

It's gonna be an interesting battle, that's for sure. They both have their good points (HDDVD is cheaper to produce, Blue-Ray has larger maximum storage) but that doesn't always make a difference. This battle, like many before it, will be decided by the consumer.

Although to be honest, I'll probably favour the format that gives me the most bang for my buck, (hd-dvd), this is why I think the ps3 might be a big flop. And for fun, here are the companies backing each side in the upcoming format war:

HDDVD
Paramount
Warner Bros.
New Line
HBO
DreamWorks
Image Entertainment
Magnolia Pictures
Brentwood Home Video
Warner Music Group
Ryko
Goldhil Entertainment
Studio Canal

BRDVD
Sony
Warner Bros.
20th Century Fox
Disney
MGM
Artisan
Lions Gate
Paramount
Weinstein
Dreamworks
BuenaVista

Pardon me. They are releasing an external drive to compete with Blueray. In the end both are HiDef like you said.

i'll support the 1st format that gets pirated easily.

i'm glad i got hd. but it only matters for sports. i don't need to see random actors' acne scars or poorly applied make up.

lol it doesnt even matter at this point, no one's really going to experience true HD until 360 releases the HDMI cables (rather than the god damn HD component cable) and when people can afford to buy tvs that actually project at 1080p (which are going anywhere from 7500+).

however 1080p plamas should drop a bit once SED tv's come out

lol so i would say, dont worry about it too much unless it actually affects you.

i think i remember reading something about a third party making a Blue Ray/HD DVD combo player, regardless i'm pretty sure that someone would be smart enough to make one.

personal preferance adam, yes HDMI can do both digital audio and high definition picture. But most of thoe people will have a home theater system. Component cable can support upto 1080i depending on your tv.

at work we have 1080i component and 1080i hdmi.. i honestly cannot tell the difference.

either one looks freaking amazing.

in my mind there's only two hdmi, and component.. fuck that dvi shit.
