Critically renowned movies that sucked.
I just saw The Thin Red Line and what a work of absolute shit.
It was one of the most self-absorbed movies I've seen, with a majority of it being spent on nature footage and vague philosophising that attempts to sound deep. Granted the cinematography is amazing, but the dialogue and characters are so vague that you feel really disconnected from the movie. Let's see some mini-reviews of overrated movies, not just movie titles please. Last edited by Paroxysm; Aug 10, 02 at 08:20 PM. |

Black Hawk Down
Small band of AMERICAN soldiers gets stranded behind enemy lines and, in the process of making it out, do the male-b0nding thing. Been there, done that. Oh, but WAIT!! It's based in the Bosnia war! It's giving a glimpse into... Ah, SHUT UP! There was hardly anything about the crisis in that movie. It was just Hollywood's attempt at making the same story seem different by placing American soldiers in a new warzone. Don't get me wrong. I love McGregor, Bloom, Sizemore, and Scott. I give them credit for making due with what little they had to work with. Last edited by Sykonee; Aug 10, 02 at 10:08 PM. |

What are you talking about? Blackhawk Down was based off true events. On October 3rd, 1993, 120 Delta Force Commandos were dropped into the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia to kidnap lead terrorist Mohammed Farrah Aidid, who had been killing U.N. workers delivering food to starving Somalis.

Whether it was based on true events is irrelevent. Tons of movies are made from true events. Hell, they already have plans on making the story of those trapped miners into a movie.
When I watch a movie, I watch it for what it offers in the package presented. In my opinion, B.H.D. was a typical American war movie, offering nothing new to the genre. |

How was Black Hawk Down like every other war movie? How? Because there were guns? And male bonding? You thought it was in Bosnia for Christsakes. Bosnia and Somalia look quite different. As well as the fact of that whole black and white thing you know. Or were you watching an entirely different movie altogether? Black Hawk Down dealt with soldiers who on a whole didn't care about their cause put into a country that didn't want them there. I think it's one of the most dangerous feeling war movies made, and one of the most tragic.
As for Thin Red Line... I didn't like it, but I wouldn't put the movie down because of that. It's a different style. There was one old guy I knew who was so absolutely enthralled and moved by that movie, he wrote an essay on its' "nature footage and vague philosophising ". I can't remember much of what he wrote, but it did open my eyes to the fact that it's a good movie. Just not meant for me. After all, if any movie causes that much of a reaction in someone, is it bad? |

Oh, all of them. Most time they were trudging through fields and jungle, though. Plus, did you get the feeling that if a soldier went down in those villages he'd be stoned and picked apart by the villagers? No. You're right to an extent saying the Vietnamese didn't want the Americans there, but it was said they could of won the war by delivering rice instead of bombs. The thing with Black Hawk Down was that the soldiers job was to help the Somalis for political sake, not out of their own goodwill.
I think out of the Vietnam movies, the one with the reporter left in Cambodia was the most tragic. And the most powerful war movie made (in my opinion) was "grave of the fireflies" |

Re: Critically renowned movies that sucked.
american beauty...what a horrible waste of film..i can't really comment on it because i don't remember the particulars of the movie, all i remember is being left with a feeling that this movie was totaly undeserving of the hype that surrounded it
was grave of the fireflies that anime movie with the two brothers in japan during world war two who were basicly living on their own after their entire families were killed in the firebombing of their city? if it is then yes, that was a truly deep movie. it really touched me emotionaly, particularly at the end. I agree with your view on American beauty. I personally think the biggest waste of money and time spent in line-ups I've had are the last 2 star wars. What crap.
Also, when I first saw Pulp fiction I walked out I hated it so much. I watched it again and really wanted to like it.. I did... But again I didn't. Just now I remembered walking out of Falling Down too. OOO OOO and Romy and Michelle's High School reunion. Ahh.. memories. Snatch tho? That was a great movie. Absolutely great. Sean, you sort of have grave of the fireflies right. It was about a brother and sister trying to survive after their city was firebombed. Their mother died, the father we never saw and the brother left the aunt because of his stubborness and pride, which ultimately killed the both of them. Everyone should see this movie, although it's a bitch to get. It took me years to find a place to buy it. |

i have to agree about american beauty. i only watched it cuz my ex wanted to see it and what a waste of time that was.
what was that fucking lame cheerleader movie... when i remember the name i'll post it, but it sucked. i love snatch, it's hilarious. i don't really rent new (acclaimed hollywoodish) releases because i rarely see one that looks remotely appealing. |
