Trainspotting sequel

Anybody heard anything about this? I've heard rumors for years now that Danny Boyle was going to make a film out of 'Porno', Irvine Welsh's follow up novel to Trainspotting. But I read recently that Ewan McGregor had refused the offer to return in his role as Mark Renton, as he wasn't a fan of the book and felt it would ruin the original movie if a sequel was made. It seems that it's still in the works though - i read somewhere else that Kelly Macdonald who played Diane was told by Boyle that she wouldn't be in the sequel. Which is strange, because Diane is a much bigger character in Porno than she is in Trainspotting.

Personally I loved the book and I think it would make a great film... but not without McGregor as Rents. Although his role is smaller in the second book, he's still an important character... and I can't see Johnny Lee Miller carrying the film as the aging, coke-addled Sick Boy. Some parts of that novel would translate so well on screen... it's pretty obvious Welsh had a film adaptation in mind when he wrote it. I think that's one of the reasons that McGregor was turned off.

I could go without McGregor as Rents. I saw the movie of Trainspotting before I read the book, but once I read the book I kinda got the feeling that McGregor missed something in his performance. Might've been the translation to screen or might've been the fact that McGregor's never been a junkie, but I just felt more depth to the character in the book.

Course, whoever would replace him would have to be a stellar actor, considering McGregor is one of my favourite actors (OBI WON KE-FUCKEN-OBI) and even he couldn't bring the right amount of truth to it...

Maybe cast Pete Doherty?

I read the book shortly after seeing the film and I really don't think the lack of depth was due to McGregor's short comings on the portrayal. I think a lot of Renton's character was lost on the translation from novel to screenplay. I've read "Porno" a couple times and think it's a stellar novel, but just like "Trainspotting" I think it's going to need a certain touch in brining it to the silver screen.

I wouldn't ask Pete Doherty to help me carry in my groceries. He's a brilliant poet and songwriter, but that's about as far as it goes.

i just re-read Trainspotting, then watched the movie... i thought he was spot on as Rents. obviously you can't get quite the same insight to a character in a film, as you can in a book.
