02/02/2003~~~GDFEST~~~Bellevue WA
What is gdfest?
Upon first hearing about this event I hadn't the slightest idea of what it was going to be like. Well let me tell you it was one of the best, organized LAN party i've ever attended. First off even though it's a 2.5 -3.0 drive (with border-crossing) it was well worth it. I arrived Saturday morning behind schedule after being stuck at the border for a good 40 mins and trapped in traffic due to an accident on the I5.
Big Deal! We made it there before the Spearhead Tourny started so I was content with the driving efforts.
The arrival:
Upon arriving we noticed just how big this venue was. The pictures on the site (gdfest.com) weren't a stretch of the imagination on emphasizing just how big the venue was. It was huge and there were a shitload of gamers and computers spread through the entire room. Duh! it's a LAN party right? Well i've been to a few and this by far was the biggest I've ever seen. Rows and rows of lit up cases, monitors and eyes. My pictures will be up soon.
Setting up:
So we got to the table (my gf and I) and we see this glowing ninja-star illuminating from the base of the table. I looked down and finally saw it close up....it was CUJO'S bomb-ass case! Man what a sweet job on the styling graphics and lighting effects. Custom cases whut!!? Oh santa-CUJO...make me one of those cases =) As for the set-up? It was a breeze. All the tables were stacked with powerbars and there was a place you could make your own ethernet cable. The trick was finding a master who could make them! lol. I must have went through 4 before I ran back to the car and stretched my home cable to the main box. Better luck next time for me I guess.
Lights and Decor
The NCG intro was triple-a. Cujo could retire from =NCG= and just make intros I swear. Great sound, (mackie monitors) and visuals to notify us everytime swag was being given away. And the swag seemed endless. Free this, free that every 15 mins it seemed. I walked out of there with t-shirts, key chains, cd's, gizmos a mouse and a top of the line
RADEON 9700 ATI PRO!!!! No shit....it's sitting here gleaming and waiting for my new comp to be built. My mobo is UNWORTHY!
Gametime:
So after meeting CUJO, BD, HAMMY, JEDI, ARMY, #9 and CP who was busier than medic on d-day (we met up later so it's all good) it was time to rock the mini-lan game of SPEARHEAD. I was stoked to get this game on and I knew it was going to be a challenge. I will admit I arrived to the tourny after a sleepless/work night and an empty stomach so I guess we'll get the bodily excuses out of the way first ;). Tournament wise I did ok. 5th place to be exact. My reasons for the loss? 1) Tired 2)The game-start delay 30 mins 3)My all sniping strategy 4) Foreign mouse + equipment (i play on a P3-800 with a geforce 2! It's like a honda civic driver stepping into a ferrari! =) The computer systems hosting the tournaments were A-1. Everybody was on an equal playfield. The box went to a very hard working =NCG= man so I felt no pain when I watched that box being awarded to CUJO. Awesome job dood. I will have my revenge!! j/k Next season perhaps?
Final Thoughts & Thanks
This is basically a wake-up call for anyone who didn't attend. GET UR ASS TO THE NEXT ONE!! I don't care what city you're in, whether or not you have to work, what religion you are or what kind of PC you own....come down and support the next one!
HUGE thanks to CP for showing us WestCoasters what a true LAN party should look like and also running a server so we can keep our skills up to speed and big thanks to CUJO for keeping the =NCG=MOHAA crew in check, working on strats and helping maintain the =NCG= posse. Without your hardwork we wouldn't be able to attend these types of events. I look forward to the next one and assisting in promoting the festival North of the border.
