any Noam Chomsky fans around?
i think his most recent book was 9/11, i havent had the chance to read it yet even though i bought it months ago. If anyone has read it, let me know how it was.
Chomsky has always talked a lot about manufacturing Consent. he talks about media propaganda and how the distortion of world events allows for the u.s government to pull things off such as the invasion of iraq. I dont think chomsky gets the recognition he deserves. Micheal Moore is great but chomsky is a fuckin genuis and few young people have heard his name. I suppose the reason for that would be that Moore can reach the less educated population, but what a society it would be if the ideas of chomsky were heard by all. He's covered so many topics from east timor, to kosovo too american imperialism. He is constantly releasing essays and articles i'd say he is the best political commentary writers out there. This man has probably done more for linguistics then anyone else has in the past 50 years. If you havent heard of him look him up, if you already read many of his ideas read some more, there is so much available. Last edited by cinist; Jan 15, 04 at 10:27 AM. |

I'm reading Necessary Illusions right now. Great book so far.
He and Michael Moore also have a film coming out on Friday. I'm not too sure about the details but I'm pretty sure you can guess what it's about. It's at two of the independent theatres. As soon as I find the flyer I'll post more details. |

You'd be very interested in seeing a movie called The Corporation, which is playing at the Ridge Theatre next week http://www.ridgetheatre.com/PDFs/Rid...12_03A_web.pdf

Chomsky is quite possibly one of the most brilliant minds of the 20th century, but I would hardly venture to say he's an unknown.
Some of Chomsky's most brilliant views are around the whole theory of "Freedom of Speech". Years ago there was some serious backlash towards Chomsky due to a French writer using a piece of his as an intro to his book on "How The Holocaust Never Happened". Hordes of reporters sought to lynch Chomsky for giving use of his piece as the intro, and many labelled him nothing more than a racist based on this. Chomsky stood his ground and stated that he was not defending the man's point, but his right to express that point. At anyrate I would definately say that man is not an unknown, hell how many unknowns do you know that have appeared in a U2 video? |

yeah, manufacturing concent was a very good documentary!
i can't say that i enjoyed 9/11 quite that much, i got through about half of it and stopped. hehe. some of his ideas on language in general are really interesting, i definitely recommend reading a bit about his philosophy on the subject, getting away from the political. ooh and i'm really excited about him coming here, i'd like to go! |
