i also find it difficult to sit my ass down and watch crap on TV. i can't get involved in the stories anymore...it takes up too much time. i would rather watch movies where i know that in 2-3 hours it will be finished and i don't have to go back next week to find out what happens. |

I LOVE the daily show I think that it is one of the more funny shows on television... On a side note... Why is it that a thread giving props (IE. somethign positive) to something not even on this site, nor in the freaking country ends up with some peeps bantering and cuttign each other down (IE something negative)

Americans=group of like minded bad people who want war and death! Us Canadians=good people who hug puppies! Thanks for sorting that out :) I think you're missing the point. Its so easy to lump everyone together. You make it seem like everyone in america would be offended by his show because he makes fun of them, because, you know... they all think the same! Im not trying to be an ass, but it just bothers me that the distinction between Americans and American politics cant be made. Sure there are people who support bush, but theres also a huge percentage of americans who hate what hes doing to the country (you know, those people that didnt vote for bush) that can actually make a difference (and, wait... they might even find humour in the daily show!). You think his show would be as popular, and he would have best selling books in the AMERICAN market if all he did was make fun of americans? Sorry for turning this into a bickerfest, just blanket statements about the stupidity of an entire nations people is kind of annoying. I'll stop. oh and... yay tv! |

Firstly, I don't think anyone is saying that all Americans think the same or that they all want war and death. Obiviously Jon Stewart and the great majority of his audience are Americans; some Americans are just dandy. The point, however--which everyone seems to have missed--is that Jon Stewart is making fun of that collective responsible for making America (and its political system) what it is today, that is, the American people as a whole, not as individual Americans. Secondly, there isn't a huge percentage of Americans who hate Bush. Of the 60% of eligible voters who actually did vote, 48% voted for Kerry. That means only about 29% of Americans actually cared enough to try seriously to change things. That's why a lot of people group Americans together when talking about politics; most of them like the way America is going. That makes Americans like Jon Stewart stand out as being, somehow, a little unAmerican. By the way, I don't hate Americans. I just think most of them need to take a good look at exactly what their country's doing, rather than giving in to propaganda. How can you not bicker when it comes to politics? I thought that was the point... No one actually takes this stuff seriously, do they? It's all a joke; that's why it's so funny... |

^i didn't really find it that convincing. i understand the points that he is trying to make, but you can't deny that he is making fun of individual politicians and what they say. sure, he understands that those politicians wouldn't be in power if certain areas of the country weren't dumb enough to vote them in. but, every single one of his jokes/parodies/satires is on George Bush...or Dick Cheney...or the Pope...
edit: also in his little analysis of the percentage of americans who wanted to change things...he forgot people that were routinely denied the ability to vote because they were black/poor/registered democrats living outside the country. my roommate who is a registered democrat never even received his absentee ballot. so, many of the people that would probably have voted against Bush weren't even allowed to vote. therefore, sinnerman's percentages are extremely fucked up. I totally agree with you when you say he's making fun of individual politicians. There's no question; it's just too easy. I just think he makes fun of the people responsible for electing those politicians almost as much. It's true that a lot of people were wrongfully denied the right to vote in that election. But, I think you've seriously overestimated that number. Even if that happened to three million people (which would have resulted in a fuck of a lot more civil unrest than we witnessed), it would only be 1% of the population. I don't think those percentages are that far off. If you want statistics you can check out America Votes on CNN. |

The only reason for my post was to point out that I found impures comment about how ashes wouldnt like the show because he makes fun of "you americans" to be pretty unfair. Even if she only meant it towards anyone who bush supporters or non-voters. Sure some blinded bush supporters out there might get pissed at the stuf he jokes about, but I actually believe that Americans do have some sense of logic. If they are given a chance to look at other sides of the story than whats presented to them by fox 24/7 then they wont all just "hate" the show because it goes against who they may have voted for. |
