Sin City
The movie pretty much matched my expectations.
The three main male actors were all really good. Mickey Rourke was my fave, though. He just gave more of a multi-dimensional performance than the other two did. The female actors were alright. Jessica Alba is WAY better at doing scenes with strong emotions than "normal talking" scenes. Jamie King can't act. Period. Rosario Dawson, and Brittany Murphy were what you'd expect. When I read another review before seeing it, they said this movie had LOTS of violence. I didn't really think so. After seeing Kill Bill, I've found none to match the amount of violence from that film. Sin City does have a lot of gore and blood, but it's more stylized than Kill Bill. Plus, it was less mindless. Storywise, it was strong. The movie was taken from three of Frank Miller's graphic novels (The Hard Goodbye, The Big Fat Kill, and That Yellow Bastard). Nothing too original, but having the creator of the graphic novels being a co-director, the scenes and dialogue were pretty much straight from the book. I found for some scenes this formula was awkward. In a scene concerning Bruce Willis in the dark in a motel, it ended up being a little too cheesy. I can imagine it working really well in the book though. The high-contrast black and white translated extremely well from print to film. The art direction was great. Unlike Sky Captain, the CG sets actually looked real. Worth seeing in theatres. Last edited by acidic_liquid; Apr 01, 05 at 06:12 AM. |

^Have you read the books though? Being a comic book geek myself I'm really looking forward to seeing how well this translates from paper to screen.
The star power for this movie should bring in the people who don't know the story at all. On top of that the film style is intriguing and seems to have a lot of people interested too. I think I'll be seeing it on Sunday... very excited! |

No :( I wanna read and compare now though.
I just read from movie sites how closely adapted the movie and the comic is. Apparently, pretty damn close. What made me really want to see this was the style. It's like Sky Captain but not shitty. And the director. I liked Robert Rodriguez's other movies. The cast is great, but I tend to look down on movies with an all-star cast. It's like they're compensating for something. Not the case here though. |

I actually have all the books and I've heard the same stories of how the movie and novels are very similar. It's about time something has been translated over to film and actually retains most of it's original story. |

that film was amazing on soooo many levels. most faithfull comicbook adaption ever, hands down. visually and story wise it was incredible. the fact that frank miller co-directed it really shows through every frame and scene is composed like a comic book frame. as far as the acting, pretty strong throughout. Benicio del toro is fucking wicked as always and i have to say clive owen did a really good job as well. I'm kinda likin the fact that he's up to be the next bond after seeing him in sin city.
oh and as for brittany murphy, jessica alba and rosario dawson...smokin! wow. |

There are 9 (I think) books in all. I'm up for another movie. If they do it right. |

I would have to say that I didnt enjoy this movie was much as expected. I didnt realize how much violence was in it. Fighting and blood usually make me feel a little uncomfortable and almost sick.. so I had to take a bit of a break from it. I also didnt like how the story jumped all over the place, and it seemed to long.. Id give it a 7/10! =D

as for sin city, I went in with pratically no knowledge about the story. overall, came out very pleased. Be warned, there is a lot of cheezy dialogue but it's easy to let it pass with it being a very noirish film. and agreed, mickey's character was my favorite... and elijah wood is still holding that record strong for being the creepiest acting/looking character in every movie he's in. Also, weird coincedence that mickey's last name is rourke and the bad guys in the film's last names were rourke as well. |

I give it a 9.5/10
the cinemotography was really really impressive, tottaly alternating so the cg doesnt look played out. The violence was pretty enjoyable, I had a chuckle here and there. The techniques in the movies with the use of colors was tottaly dope, especially with the whites of peoples clothing and bandages appearing on them when the lighting was nearly impossible to highlight them that much, a black-light and industrial lighting...and the black and white setting on the cameras, sheer genious I say. Jessica Albas acting wasnt up to par with the rest of the actors. Overall something worth to see. |
