Amityville Horror
Ok, I'll admit it, the two main reasons I wanted to see this movie are 1.) I love seeing horror films (no matter how cheesy) 2.) RYAN REYNOLDS SHIRTLESS.
I've never seen the original, so I'm not going to make a comparison. The movie starts off by telling the story of the family that died in the Amityville house. It's told in the typical horror movie flashbacks with the rough, quick cuts. This only takes about 5 minutes. Contrasting this, the Lutz family is shown a year later, in a happy household in Long Island. Kathy is a widow, with her three kids, Billy, Michael and Chelsea. She's shown immediately with her new husband, George. The movie never really says what happened to Kathy's first husband. Of course, the friction that is expected between the oldest kid and the new husband is there. And the mom, as always, is trying to make things work. The kids are off to school and Kathy and George go house hunting. They find the Amityville house, which is huge and is on sale for way below the normal price. They buy it and move in. It starts off just like any other horror movie. I wasn't expecting much out of it, especially after seeing "meh" horrors like Ring Two and laughable ones like Cursed. I was surprised, though. It may have been the fact that I was sitting with three pansy asses (I didn't know they'd be scared easily, these are big guys)--one who screamed at almost every scary part, one who took off his hoodie so he could hug and hide behind it, and one I couldn't see because a hoodie was in the way--but I thought the movie was scarier than most. The special effects were perfect. I never noticed them, which is good. They bring the scares really well and don't go overboard. Yes, there are still horror movie clichés, but I didn't think they took away from the scariness. I don't want to say anything about it really, it'll ruin the fun. It was just scarier than I expected. Some of the people on the elevator didn't really agree with me, though. Meh, I think it's worth seeing in the theatres. Also, I like how they said "Based on the true story" instead of "Based on a true story." It just sounds more authoritative. I don't know how much of the movie is taken from reality, though. |

and they need a catalyst for the situation in wich to capitalize on. and in this case, the catalyst is the most famous and well documented paranormal hauntings in america.....
entirely contrived? no i dont think so. certain segments made up to make a better movie?.....certainly. |

for a site like www.amityvillehorrortruth.com to claim to know the "truth" they sure seem a little biased towards believing the lutz story and not examine any counter-evidence
here's an interesting read. in particular the last 4 paragraphs: http://www.amityvillemurders.com/capitalizing.html who knows, maybe the story is really true. im personally leaning more towards the lutz family completely making it up. |

i read a book a while ago called The Demonologists.
it was about an older couple who work as demonologists. they worked on the amityville house, and showed pictures, the book is true, or so they say. some of the cases they worked on were so creepy. it's a good book to read, not long and like 10 horror films in a book! |

just finished watching it.
I was well aware of the happenings surrounding that house. I've been to the actual house on Long Island as it's only about half hour from my family's house in South Setauket Park. The property itself is pretty creepy, a definite wierd vibe surrounding it. Now that that's out of the way, it was somewhat entertaining, some parts really creeped me out, but other than that it's nothing but a revamped version of an old drawn out story. Glad I downloaded it and didn't actually have to spend any money on it. |
