Movie: The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
OKay so when my friend asked me to watch this movie, i was a little hesitant.
After blazing of course, made it alot more interesting. The movie turned out to be not only funny but actually entertaining, mind you the weed helped out a bit, but even so.. this movie was pretty good. What its about: Everyone has bad mornings. You wake up late, you stub your toe, you burn the toast...but for a man named Arthur Dent, this goes far beyond a bad day. When he learns that a friend of his is actually an alien with advanced knowledge of Earth's impending destruction, he is transported off the Earth seconds before it is exploded to make way for a new hyperspace motorway. And as if that's not enough, throw in being wanted by the police, Earth II, an insane electronic encyclopedia, no tea whatsoever, a chronically depressed robot and the search for the meaning of life, and you've got the greatest adventure off Earth. sounds wierd yes.. but worth watching |

I'd have to say that the movie is probably better for those new to the Hitchhikers saga (trilogy of 5 books whatever) as an introduction.
As with most adaptations the books inject far more of the humour thats hinted at in the movies - it fell a bit flat for me. I did enjoy the movie, don't get me wrong, but I couldnt help noticing the glaring gaps when compared to the books. Best to go in without the books in mind really. On the subject of adaptations - Bladerunner is not only my favorite movie , but its also superior to the novel; Philip K Dyk's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" that its loosely based on. Not too many movies manage such a contrast to the positive compared to thier literary counterparts. Apocalypse Now vs The Heart of Darkness... tough call.. before I rant... i'll just stop. |

Loosely based on it?
It's pretty downright based off the Dick novel. It is missing a bunch of the philosophy stuff but they replaced that with the 80's cyberpunk flavour that's not that prevalent in the book. That being said, I have yet to see a single movie (Blade Runner included) based off a novel that surpasses the novel in intellectuality. Hitchiker's Guide is no different. THAT being said, I loved this movie. Way better than Episode 3 was. |

^ i agree partially,
the reason i say loosely is there are some huge departures that make it seem more like it took heavy influence from the book as source material for the themes and setting - the story arc is intact to some extent - but to me it doesnt feel as though they took the book, pointed at it and said "hey lets make that a movie" its a grey area between adaptation and homage perhaps. just my opinion. plus the book doesnt have the vangelis score and therefore totally lacking. =P |
